I would vote for Obama if he was a real progressive, but it's clear from his record he isn't. He will just push a conservative agenda while the democrats go along without resistance. To me there is no lesser of 2 evils, Obama might actually be worse because he makes the republican ideology become the "bipartisan" conventional wisdom in Washington. The center-ideology of the country is nowhere near the "center" of mainstream politics. I wonder if this election is broken enough that a majority of the population will not vote for either Romney or Obama, and if they could be mobilized to vote 3rd party or try to get rid of them all.

So what would get the best results? Voting 3rd party, voting "no confidence", or everyone just disregarding elections?

If your state does not screw 3rd parties then vote for the 3rd party candidate you believe is the right man or woman for the job.

If your state allows you to write the candidate's name on the ballot then write the candidate's name you believe is the right man or woman for the job.

If your state is like mine and screws 3rd party candidates and writing in candidates names are not allowed then simply leave that part of the ballot blank. You can leave that part of the ballot blank and just vote for what ever other political races are going and ballot questions.

If you don't mind going through the process of voting just to make a meaningless gesture that no one will really notice, then by all means vote third party or do a write in if those are permissible. Just don't be surprised when no news vans show up asking for an explanation of your bold rebel stance. Until there are publicly financed campaigns with even funding for all, there is simply no role a third party candidate can play except possibly spoiler for one of the two candidates with an actual chance to win.

I guess that would depend on what type of progressive you are. I personally just do not vote in races where I do not at least somewhat tolerate something about one or the other(s) or write in crazy names just in case the local paper does a story on the names people write-in as it sometimes will. I am a social progressive fiscal & rights conservative so I have the opposite problem as you--I never know which one will be the lesser of the two idiots.

Always vote for the person you most want to be President. Always. If there is nobody running for President that you would want to have the job, do not vote. Nobody even counts 'none of the above' votes, so their value as protest votes is negligible.

I think this is reasonable. If they aren't offering you anything you want vote for someone who does

Voting third party.

Any establishment wanting to maintain power would relish dissent staying home. Also, writing in none of the above doesn't work in that many and perhaps most states, have laws in place that if you don't write in a valid write in candidate, they simply don't count it. You have to register to be a write in in these states. Don't know how many but... thems the laws.
