You Gotta Love Free Stuff

Yes, and a colonoscopy costing $3k is the result of stupid policies as well.

Medical procedures just shouldn't cost as much as they do.

My daughters back surgery came to a grand total of $467,985.87. I have private insurance and my out of pocket was still over $6,000.00.

One tylenol suppository for her fever the day after surgery was $70.00.

Ridiculous.

What is a person supposed to do? Not seek medical treatment?

Per day for a hospital room it was aprox. $21,000.00/day.

Those are freegin' ridiculous and pointless numbers. There can be no justification for doing that to people.

No, but those are typical charges. Why is it so expensive? Good question. The fact is that we, as a nation, can not afford it. Medical care overall costs far more than the entire federal budget exclusive of Medicare and Medicaid.

I think what you describe is Marxism. Tried and failed. Nice of you to want to control all business profits and a person's wealth.

You should educate yourself on marxism and actually try to read the responses. It is one thing to have a profit, but when you end up paying 20 dollars for an item that costs less than a cent to manufacture today (and yes that includes the costs of development and research.) you are creating a problem. I don't mind a markup, and I don't mind a person turning profit, but when you see gas prices increasing 50 cents per gallon at the same franchise within a few miles in the same state you know someone is gouging. I know you are all for it because you hope to someday be the person doing the gouging, but part of the problem in this world and especially in america right now is the overwhelming greed.

Sounds like you wanted something that you did not pay for, you know there are all sizes of insurance policies, from cheap that cover very little, to expensive that will cover everything under the sun. What did you have?

I take it you have never jumped through the hoops of the insurance company to get everything approved and do everything they said to have them refuse the payment for the service they agreed to pay for. Feel lucky, it is not a matter of not having coverage, but rather that the insurance companies know that in many cases they can avoid paying through refusing to abide by their contract that you pay for. There are no penalties for them refusing payment and then being forced to pay later, but you may very well go through lots of problems with your credit or cash funds while you are fighting for the service you paid them for.

When someone like you who wants to live in a Marxist society, why would you care where I hear anything from. Oh that's right you want control over me, never going to happen.

It is nice to see you have not had these problems. Feel lucky and remember they will come when you are at your weakest and ill.

Why stop at health care, why does not the government regulate all pricing so that you can only make a certain profit off your product or services? Gee look at how much profit Microsoft made off of people.

Our medical system is not perfect but putting it in the hands of government makes it a lot worse. SS, Medicare, Medicaid are all broke, and run by government.

It's not even in the hands of government. There's just regulations so companies play fair. Same as any other industry.

Seniors have never been an inconvenient expense, it's reality, free gets you elected.

Why do you keep using this word FREE? The VP said "no co-pay" which, at least to me implies insurance coverage which is being paid for so "no co-pay" does not necessarily equal FREE

Medicare fines over hospitals' readmitted patients

If you or an elderly relative have been hospitalized recently and noticed extra attention when the time came to be discharged, there's more to it than good customer service.

As of Monday, Medicare will start fining hospitals that have too many patients readmitted within 30 days of discharge due to complications. The penalties are part of a broader push under President Barack Obama's health care law to improve quality while also trying to save taxpayers money.

About two-thirds of the hospitals serving Medicare patients, or some 2,200 facilities, will be hit with penalties averaging around $125,000 per facility this coming year, according to government estimates.

Oh, oh. The intent is good, but that policy is likely to backfire.

"We can't readmit Mrs. Jones, as she was just dismissed a couple of weeks ago. Let's just give her some pain pills and send her home."

or:

"She's probably ready to go home, but let's keep her another couple of days to make sure we won't have to readmit her."

That second one would then avoid said complications, thus achieving the goal of improving care and saving money.

The first implies severe character flaws on part of the doctors.

At 20 grand or so a day for hospital stays, the second might save some money depending on how many of those patients actually would have to come back.

The first would more likely be said by the hospital administrator.
