Forgive my reluctance to join you off the deep end, but you're creating a narrative that isn't observable in the provided clip. The narrator is professing a climate where a healthy govt. relationship can exist, (his example clubs & churches) or more specifically how each and every one of us is connected to govt. in some form. The words "expansion", "takeover" or the phrase "bigger govt." never once appear in the :17 clip, although I will acknowledge the opportunities a shortened, out of context clip can/will create for loons who look for the crazy in everything.

"Government is the only thing we all belong to".. pretty clear.

Had they said "Government belongs to us..." it would have been correct. But we do not belong to government.

A video that aired Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention proclaiming that “government is the only thing that we all belong to” is getting strong reaction from conservatives, and the Obama campaign is disavowing involvement in the production, BuzzFeed reports.

The video, entitled “Welcome to Charlotte,” includes other proclamations like: “We do believe you can use government in a good way.”

Conservatives took to Twitter on Tuesday to denounce the video. Mitt Romney tweeted: "We don't belong to government, the government belongs to us." Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, had a one-word reaction to the video: “WOW.” Pundit David Gergen noted: “quote may set off the right.”

An Obama aide emailed BuzzFeed disavowing involvement in the video: “The video in question was produced and paid for by the host committee of the city of Charlotte. It’s neither an OFA nor a DNC video, despite what the Romney campaign is claiming. It's time for them to find a new target for their faux outrage."

The executive director of the host committee also said that the video was unaffiliated with both the campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

no, it's the accurate expression of the dnc's overall view of govt in general as the one institution capable of uniting a nation, an entity to be embraced not opposed, a body to be celebrated

the bigger the govt, the better

the dems are simply, bottom-line the party of big govt

they can try and they can deny, but everyone knows

and under barack hussein obama, the unleashed apologists of govt expansion and extension have gone berserk with unbridled and buoyant activity.

the fact is our govt is already way too big, it tries to do thousands of things which would be better left to the initiative and ingenuity of free individuals, whom it seems to distrust and seeks to repress

we know best, we're the experts, we have harvard and the nyt on our side

We do when you think like Obama, he believes government owns everything you have, and it is he that wants to redistribute it the way he see fit. That is his big government mentality. The words "belong to" translated is they "own you."

Many people don't see themselves as "belonging to" the government. The government is this entity that they have to pay money to and which otherwise just gets in their way. They might vote in elections, but the pinheads, parasites, and pimps still get their way. The government is something they'd rather not have to deal with most of the time. It's certainly not something they'd want to have to rely on for anything other than national defense, law and order, and street lights and the like.

Considering the history of other statements that put an emphasis on the importance of government, how it is the 'solution', how it helps people... it seems somewhat clear what was meant by 'belong to' in this case.. Hey, every now and then the partisans actually let a bit of the truth slip out.... Both sides do it.
