Paul Ryan slammed President Obama on Thursday for failing to rescue an auto factory in his Wisconsin district — one that closed in 2008, under President George W. Bush.
The latest attack highlights the complicated politics of the auto rescue for Ryan, who was one of only a handful of Republicans to vote in favor of the 2008 bailout that President Bush signed as a stopgap measure to prevent the industry from going under.
“I remember President Obama visiting it when he was first running, saying he’ll keep that plant open,” Ryan said in Ohio Thursday, describing the shuttered GM factory in Janesville, Wis. “One more broken promise.”

The guy is turning out to be one of the biggest liars out there. Good pick Mitt.

He said Obama said this and Obama said this. Are you still in possession of your faculties? How does accurately quoting someone make the quoter a liar?

From the article you linked:

<snip>
Ryan blamed rising gas prices under Obama for the closing. He echoed the complaint in an interview with a local ABC affiliate, suggesting it showed that Obama’s auto rescue was a sham.

“It didn’t help Janesville,” he said. “They shut our plant down. It didn’t help Kenosha. I represent there; they shut down the Chrysler plant.”

The Detroit News noted that Obama said during a visit in early 2008 that government help and some restructuring could keep the plant open. But after the financial crisis and a collapse in demand for the SUVs the factory produced, it shut down in December 2008 in the waning days of Bush’s second term. It’s still owned by GM, but has been closed ever since.

The following is a lie: Rising gas prices caused the closing of the Janesville plant

This is a lie: The GM plant in Janesville closed despite GM being bailed out by Obama.

Yes, we can call Mr Ryan a liar for making those statements.

Ryan should have just told the workers not to worry, because wealth will be trickling down directly.

There was a bail out of GM. The Janesville plant closed. Saying the Janesville plant closed in spite of the bailout is completely accurate.

Your article says that he said that, but it's not in the taped interview and it's not a quote from the Congressman. Do you have a link to the actual quote that shows that he said it?

One thing that IS in the interview, though, is that the interviewer says that the Janesville plant was shuttered in 2009, not 2008. Do you check you links before you post them?

I don't know...

Allowing the Kenosha plant to shutter as it's in Ryan's district seems pretty obama-like to me. Goes hand in hand with the approach used to sue Boeing or to close Down Gibson Guitars.

I don't know who represents the Janesville area in Congress. Might be interesting to find out if the bail out bailed out more Democrat held districts than Republican. I have no idea, but if i had to bet...

I think Kasich was the Governor there at the time. Could be a causal link. That is, if you think that Obama is a small minded vengeance and agenda driven Chicago machine politician who never misses a chance to punish, blame, divide and attack.

What hope did Obama offer to the 100,000 folks who were thrown out of work by the closure of all those Auto Dealerships. We know the change he offered: Spare.

Auto-Bailout Casualties - John Berlau & Mark Beatty - National Review Online

<snip>
And perhaps no workers were less equal in the bailouts than the employees of GM and Chrysler dealerships. About 100,000 mostly blue-collar jobs — a number approaching the total work force of GM and Chrysler, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer — were put on the chopping block by “Team Auto,” the Obama administration’s auto-bailout task force, which insisted on extraordinarily rapid closures of auto dealerships during the government-organized bankruptcy proceedings.

I read the article but havent seen the exact quote...DID Obama say when he was campaigning that he would keep the plant open?

Wow...this is like...almost as egregious as those complete ****ing scumbag liars that keep trying to pin things on Romney that occurred long after he was no longer running Bain. Can you IMAGINE the kind of reprehensible ****s that would do something like that, on a CAMPAIGN TRAIL no less?

Janesville GM Assembly Plant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Plant was scheduled to close in 2010, announced in June 2008. Mostly idled by Dec 2008 except for skeleton crew working one line. So the decision to close and the closing except for a skeleton crew all happened before Obama took office.

i'm no huge fan of bailouts, but i have to say that i'm happier with GM and Chrysler being propped up than i am about the propping up of the too big to exist banks.

i also prefer it to the "solution" of letting everything fail and then cutting taxes again, hoping that prosperity will actually trickle down this time.

And could have been saved by the bail out. Why was it not?

I think it was an internal decision at GM, probably based on the fact that the large SUV's it produced were not in great enough demand.

Did you get the closing date straightened out?

This differs from Obama calling Romney a felon, and crediting him for job losses that occurred after he left Bain how?

Ah, that 'double standard' complaining thing..

If one doesn't do their own homework, they shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Seems unlikely that the bailout could have saved it.

That is what the article said.

The closing date was in 2009.

Somebody made decisions that saved some and closed others. Forget about buying that new Pontiac or Oldsmobile or Saturn.

What caused the axe to fall on some and not on others?

As pointed out, the decision for the closing came before Obama was elected, Obama was in no way responsible for the closing.

You already accepted the answer for that, and you ask it again....why?

The sounds of crickets when the Golden Boy is caught red handed making up lies.

As a Conservative I will admit that Ryan is looking very green in some of his comments. He needs to get better at researching the facts behind his comments. I believe that is the problem - I'm not so sure that he is deliberately lying. I also think that this being his first appearance on the Big stage he has gotten cought up in the Gotcha tit-for-tat gutter politics that the campaigns can sink to. As a VP candidate he is expected to be an attack dawg, but he needs to realize that he shoudlnt sacrifice his credibility and integrity for that - espeically if he wants to have real consideration as a player in 2016.

A major plant closes in his own district and he doesn't even know how it went down? Is that supposed to make Ryan sound better or worse?

It makes him look blinded by Partisanship. Which seems to be a motif with him. Still though, maybe he can learn from these mistakes. Mabe he can learn to stop looking at the world through partisan cheaters and instead use his skills to help real Americans who need real solutions...instead of just partisan hackery.
