Presented With Letters, Ryan Admits Requesting Stimulus Cash

By Gregory J. Krieg | ABC OTUS News – 10 hrs ago

After repeated denials, Paul Ryan has admitted he requested stimulus cash even after sharply criticizing the program.
As recently as Wednesday in Ohio, Mitt Romney's running mate told ABC's Cincinnati affiliate, WCPO, he did not.
"I never asked for stimulus," Ryan said. "I don't recall… so I really can't comment on it. I opposed the stimulus because it doesn't work, it didn't work."
Two years ago, during an interview on WBZ's NewsRadio he was asked by a caller if he "accepted any money" into his district. Ryan said he did not.
"I'm not one [of those] people who votes for something then writes to the government to ask them to send us money. I did not request any stimulus money," the congressman answered.
But as we've now learned, Ryan did write letters. He did request stimulus funds.
"The Olympics may be over but Paul Ryan could have gotten a gold medal in hypocrisy," a senior administration official told ABC's Jake Tapper. "As someone who spends all day every day railing against government spending, but then secretly seeks millions in funds for pet projects, he is as Washington as it gets."
In 2009, Ryan wrote to Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis asking for stimulus money to cover costs on two energy conservation projects in his home state of Wisconsin. In the letter, Ryan said the funds would help create jobs and reduce "energy consumption" in the state. At least one of the companies received the requested cash.
The letters were first obtained by The Wall Street Journal through the Freedom of Information Act back in early 2010. The Boston Globe turned them up for the first time during this campaign season Wednesday. At that point, a Ryan aide referred ABC News back to what a Ryan spokesman said when the letters first went public.
"If Congressman Ryan is asked to help a Wisconsin entity applying for existing Federal grant funds, he does not believe flawed policy should get in the way of doing his job and providing a legitimate constituent service to his employers," the spokesman told the Milwaukee (Wisc.) Journal Sentinel.
Thursday, Ryan responded to the questions himself.
"After having these letters called to my attention I checked into them, and they were treated as constituent service requests in the same way matters involving Social Security or Veterans Affairs are handled," Ryan said in a statement. "This is why I didn't recall the letters earlier. But they should have been handled differently, and I take responsibility for that.
"Regardless, it's clear that the Obama stimulus did nothing to stimulate the economy, and now the President is asking to do it all over again."

So his office forwarded some requests from his constituents, and he takes responsibility for the oversight.

Gosh, what a horrible person .

Ya the OP kind of owned himself on that one...

:) self-pwnage is the best-pwnage.

Kind of goes against the "rigid ideologue" mantra they're trying to paint him as too.

Only a partisan hack could come to that conclusion...

Are you also slamming Obama as he was against the surge before he was for it, against tax cuts before he signed them, against the patriot act before he expanded them, was FOR transparency in government before he shrouded his entire administration in lies and secrecy, was against GITMO before he expanded black ops prison use, was basically against everything Bush did, before he became Bush...

Gosh, what a horrible person .

No, it went this way: he claimed the Stimulus would not work and a waste of money, letters were sent in his name (not forwarded from somebody else) requesting the Stimulus money, he lied or made a false statement about not requesting for said money.

Not a horrible person, just a big hypocrite and either a liar or someone with a very convenient memory.

There are threads about Obama/Biden and there are threads about Ryan/Romney, can't you read the title of this thread? Obama being a hypocrite would not change the fact that Ryan is a big one as well, or that he may have lied - which this thread is about.

Not surprised YOU also chose the same route...he's a liar and a hypocrite...I guess it's ok when your side does it...wanna start a thread about Obama, go for it...

Maybe he was intentionally dishonest (lied) or maybe he was not dishonest and didnt know. Based on what we have? Thats a wafer thin line to attack the guy on. ANY congressman that did NOT request stimulus money for their state of citizens would be a BAD representative. There isnt an 'opt out' clause when it comes to federal taxes. If your citizens are going to have to PAY for the program and you dont fight for a share of that program, whether you like it or not, you are NOT representing your people. Now...if they ever build in an opt out offering where states can choose to not participate AND they arent stuck with the tax burden, they opt out and STILL request money from the fed...thats another thing entirely.

heh...my side. I say the same thing about mindless Romney supporters that I do about mindless O-bots. You are tripping over yourself to call the guy a liar...so...do you hold 'your' guy to the same standard or are you just another mindless partisan hypocritical douchebag?

Ah..but it DOES speak volumes about those that START the thread...or for that matter post in it. For example...YOU...do you rush to criticize Obamas hypocrisy and blatant lies? Please do tell...

At least those people know to start a thread when they want to discuss a certain topic, that's what the "Start New Thread" function's for. What do you think it says about you that you have to bring Obama up in a thread that's not about him? So who are the hell are you to say anything about what someone's action says about them?

I don't rush to do anything. I click on a thread I think interesting or have some new information I haven't come across, I comment on the topic at hand. I don't go around putting Obama into every thread that's not about him. I don't have an obsession about him like some people seems to have.

I have condemned Obama for many things, including not being liberal enough, not getting out of afghanistan, not coming around on SSM quick enough...but let's get back to this scumbag liar...he clearly lied about writing letters for Stimulus money after claiming he did no such thing...spin it any way you want....

SO you DO make the same kind of comments towards Obama for his lies and hypocrisy?

The thread begs the question. You start it or respond to it, 'why' is also fair game.

Ddi he? Please show where he 'lied' since you have proof of this. His response is that someone in his office responded at the behest of a constituent. He took responsibility for that. Now...in order for you to actually call him a 'liar' you have to disprove that. Ready? Set? Go!

And in the meantime I would really love to read some of your comments against Obama. Seeing the passion you have for Ryan, they should be very compelling. Can you refer any of them? Thanks in advance!

Except That One Time, Paul Ryan Never Asked for Stimulus Money

Paul Ryan got busted lying about requesting stimulus money in 2009 for two Wisconsin businesses while at the same time campaigning against stimulus spending in Congress, and now that the truth is out there Ryan says he never should have asked for the money in the first place.

The Boston Globe reported on Tuesday that Ryan wrote letters to the Department of Energy supporting grant requests from two Wisconsin businesses "to help thousands of local businesses and homes improve their energy efficiency, agency documents show." They won the grants, which is great, but at the same time Ryan was in Congress lobbying against economic recovery packages. Remember, this is 2009 and the economy is still in the pits.

"No, I never asked for stimulus," Ryan told WCPO-TV in Cincinnati on Thursday. It wouldn't be a good look for him, asking for stimulus, considering he's the idealogical guide of the Republican party. Those things do not mix! But then Think Progress was all, "well then, what do you call these?" They dug up the four letters Ryan wrote to the DoE.

Now that he's been officially busted, Ryan's pleading ignorance as defense. "They were treated as constituent service requests in the same way matters involving Social Security or Veterans Affairs are handled," Ryan said in a statement. "This is why I didn’t recall the letters earlier. But they should have been handled differently, and I take responsibility for that." He didn't know they were stimulus grants, so it's okay. It was a big misunderstanding. And Obama is still wrong! "Regardless, it’s clear that the Obama stimulus did nothing to stimulate the economy, and now the President is asking to do it all over again." We think that's called having your cake and eating it too.

Ryans full of chit...his record is being exposed now in alot of venues.....hes a bait and switcher...hes what everyone wants him to be at the moment just like romney... even some REAL conservatives are talking about it..

"They were treated as constituent service requests in the same way matters involving Social Security or Veterans Affairs are handled," Ryan said in a statement. "This is why I didn’t recall the letters earlier. But they should have been handled differently, and I take responsibility for that."

Wow! I think it's time to change that lean of yours...this is blatant lying and any INDEPENDENT would truly see it...If he didn't "recall" writing the letters, he should have said so, but he didn't. He said he DIDN'T write the letters...

we'll just agree to disagree and you can continue to be "that"guy...

Yes, he lied, and like so many Republican members of Congress who trashed the stimulus on the national stage while trumpeting its successes back home, he is a hypocrite. But the most disturbing thing to me is his insistance that the stimulus bill didn't do anything. If he actually believes that then he doesn't know the first thing about economics, and if he doesn't believe it then he's simply lying. There are a lot of arguments that can be made against the stimulus, but one of them is not that it didn't do anything.

SO you DO make the same kind of comments towards Obama for his lies and hypocrisy?

I criticise him in the relevant thread where I see fit. Again, you have no authority to ask me about anything I do.

The thread begs the question. You start it or respond to it, 'why' is also fair game.

If you want to make a thread about me, I suggest you start a thread about me, this thread has a topic, and it's not about me, read the title.

Gosh, what a horrible person .

Not a horrible person but definitely not the new Golden Boy the Republicans have been trying to paint him. He is just a pocket size Etch-A-Sketch, thats all.
