Hours after Mitt Romney said he's never paid less than 13 percent in taxes over the past decade, President Barack Obama's re-election campaign bluntly told the Republican candidate to "prove it" by releasing his returns.

"We would say: 'Prove it, Gov. Romney," Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt told reporters on a conference call.

Romney told reporters at an impromptu press conference in South Carolina that he's never paid less than a 13 percent tax rate over the last 10 years and blasted Democratic critics, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, for leveling the "totally false" charge that he's paid no taxes.

"He has the ability to prove his claim," LaBolt said.

"Look, this is a candidate who has defied bipartisan precedent: His own father put out 12 years' worth of returns, Gov. [George W.] Bush put out returns for every year of when he was governor," the spokesman added.

"Yet Gov. Romney has only put out two years' worth of returns. And the fact is the American people deserve the opportunity to look through those documents and to make their own conclusions," LaBolt said.

Trouble is, the American people would never see the returns. Only Obama's cronies would see them. Do you have a website with Obama's returns, I want to comb through them.

Haven't we roasted this chestnut in at least 5 threads already?

He never gets enough of being against Romney, even if he has to repeat himself.

I guess we all have to have something which helps us get up in the morning.

We have roasted so many chestnuts that they are now they look like little pieces of who knows what! Politics has become the best comedy on national TV.

You must not have looked very hard being that they are right there on his website for the whole world to see. 12 years of them too.

So how do Obama supporters know what percentage in taxes Romney paid during the past five or ten years?

Who said they did know and what did they say?

You consider politics to be the best comedy on television? What do you watch when that's not on? Puppies Howling in Pain, or the Babies Crying Incessantly Network?

All fair-minded Americans realize that since Obama has released his last 12 years it is only fair that Romney should release his last 12. To do less shows a disrespect for the American Voter that quite honestly is the kind of thing that prevents us from being motivated to show up to the polls...He is losing both Republicans and Independents by his act of disrespect toward us.

Disrepects for the American Voter?

IMO, the disrepect for the American voter is spending like there's no tomorrow. How many generations do you thing it's going to take to pay down the national debt? Disrespect is taking $750 billion from Medicare, people that paid that money into this fund, to finance a portion of Obamacare. I could name a lot of things that if put to before the American taxpayer would be way more important than Romney's taxes

There is nothing wrong with spending if the spending is wise and will result in positive growth. The problem has become that Congress does not agree on what we should be spending on. Lefties want us spending for everything from art therapy for the homeless to free internet to welfare mothers. The righties want us to spend on unneccesary military build-up and big oil corporate subsidities for their cronies. As a Conservative I want to see our spending parred down to the basic necessities. Things that benefit Every american. The American Jobs act is a good example of this. Everyone uses some part of our nation's infra-structure be it roads, bridges, the power grid, etc. For the Party of No to obstruct this just for Gotcha political games is a disgrace that just boggles the mind. It honestly sickens me and makes me ashamed of the Republican Party.

At this point in time we, as a country and people, a.k.a., taxpayer, can't afford for our elected officials to spend anymore. We are looking over the cliff now.

But like I said, you vote for Obama or some unknown and be happy.
