2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread[W:191]

Re: 2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread

this is what would be called a thread jack

why are you trying to ruin this thread?

I note that people chosen to speak are often seen as potential candidates in the future

interesting the guy I figure is the best choice if Romney loses-Portman and then Pawlenty are not up

Pawlenty has zero chance, especially if anybody digs under the surface of his claim not to have raised taxes.

Re: 2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread

LOL - Anderson Cooper is standing out in the rain waiting for the wind to blow? Isn't there some sort of convention tonight?

Re: 2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread

I like all the business owners they are highlighting that built their own businesses.

[I am watching it online, and Scott Walker is talking now]

Re: 2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread

Anybody know any convention delegates. I won't drop names but I'm on a first name basis with two of them. I text one today when I saw her on CNN, she text me back a smiley face from the convention floor. I felt like I was part of history.

Re: 2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread

I was wondering if he will go to confession after his speech tonight. His story on Obama/welfare is bogus.

He went with the current 'work requirement waiver' lie. You know, the one that's been debunked everywhere.

He left out that Republican governors asked for the waiver so they could cut down on federal paperwork and more efficiently run their own state welfare systems.

Now he's crying about Bella and how full of life she is.

My Wife's friend who she was roommates with in college is a Delegate for Virginia. She's been enjoying it thus far, but has been involved in this stuff since she was very young so it's somewhat normal for her.

well the sources for the "Debunking" that Obama quotes are

The Washington Post (Obama toady)
The New York Times (Obama Toady)
Bill Clinton (pretends to be an Obama Toady)

the guy who apparently wrote the law agrees with the Romney camp

and as you most likely recall-I had nothing much good to say about Santorum

Every fact check I have seen agrees that it is a complete and total flat out lie that Obama is removing the work requirement. Santorum went further and said what he is doing is illegal, which will prove to be false as well since the provision for what is being done is built into the law.

I didn't catch that line from santorum-I tend to tune him out. i wonder why the guy who wrote the law claims Obama is doing that. I honestly don't know one way or another

Re: 2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread

Damn, Arthur Davis is delivery an absolutely outstanding speech. It's a convention speech, so it's a pep rally speech light on content and big on rhetoric, but the delivery, tone, presentation, and generalized message is the best one I've seen so far in the early moments of this convention.

Oh sure, after I get annoyed and turn the TV off, some one good speaks.

Did I miss Ann Romney? I wanted to catch her, he does great interview and wanted to see how she did with a speech. She is a huge asset for Romney if he uses her right. She comes off as likable, and very strong in her dealing with having MS.

It is a lie and it's amazing that Romney would resort to lies when he seemly has more real facts to spout.

Was a very nicely done speech, accentuated by the story of the guy stating it. Former Democrat congressman who was one of his national co-chairs in '08 and made one of the nominating speeches at the Democratic convention. Worth a listen if you can find it on youtube or something. Again...it's a clear convention speech, so don't expect anything more than that, but from an outside perspective simply being a political observer, it was very well done imho.

Not yet. I've honestly not heard her talk much or seen much of her, so interesting to see how it goes.

Nikki Haley is up there now, doing an admiral job.

I have to say, I'm such a pig headed male at times. I saw her and my immediate thought was "She looks like she's gained weight since she won". Then again, often when I would see Bush after not seeing him for a while I'd think "God, he looks so much older and run down now".

Nikki Haley is doing pretty well so far.

I think you will be impressed. Romney's top issue this campaign is that he is not seen much as likable. She has a way to make him seem much more human and decent. I was really impressed.

Not just a male chauvinist pig, but an ageist too!

Re: 2012 Republican National Convention, Aug 27-30, Dicussion Thread

...Ends Work Requirements
■Waives Centerpiece of Reform: On July 12, the Obama Administration issued a directive from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that guts the successful welfare reform act of 1996. Obama’s new policy allows states to waive the federal work requirement, the foundation of the reform law.
■Sidestepping the Law: Federal law does not allow HHS to waive the work requirements. When the welfare reform law was enacted in 1996, Congress specifically limited the HHS Secretary’s discretion to waiving certain state reporting requirements, which is not the heart of the reform law. The Obama Administration’s insistence that Congress actually authorized the Secretary to waive the principal reform is not credible, nor is it a fair reading of the statute.
■The End of Work Requirements: Work requirements have been watered down over the years, as liberals in Congress refused to reauthorize the law and states found loopholes to get around the requirements. The Obama Administration’s directive aims to weaken work requirements much further—to the point that they are essentially meaningless.
■Americans Favor Work Requirements: The most recent polling data show that the vast majority—83 percent—of Americans favor work requirements be included in welfare.

Gutting Welfare Reform: Ending Welfare as We Know It

Was Santorum campaigning for himself? That seemed to be who he was talking about most of the time.
