Biden Says Republicans Will Put People Back In Chains [W: 84]

That's what gets Obama in trouble as well. He's off telepromptor, gets on a roll, and before he knows it, his mouth opens and he inserts foot.

That might explain the "you didn't build that" gaff. He is still being spoon fed that little "whoops, I shouldn't have said that" comment daily.

But again, context matters. I pay less attention to verbal slip-up and more attention to the substative arguments. And it would appear I'm not alone. Take the words of Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), for example, on the subject. His quote from a blog post on theHill.com, "Black caucus leader: 'Chains' uproar 'makes absolutely no sense'", dated 8/16/2012:

"The vice president, if you look at what he said in context, he was saying Wall Street has created a major problem in this country and Mitt Romney wants to come in and give those guys the ability to do it again," Cleaver said.

"

And it would put you back in chains. You would have another Wall Street collapse that will impact the nation and the world. And I'm not here to defend Vice President Biden. I don't even think that needs to be defended."

Again, the reference wasn't made as a slight to Black people. It was a reference to how the economy would likely go right back down hill if Team Romney had their way.

Rangel on Biden’s ‘Chains’ Comment: ‘You Bet Your Life It Was Stupid’ | Politicker

AS USUAL you are WRONG!!!!

Why? Because Congressman Rangle said so? Don't make me laugh! You no more respect Charlie Rangle's opinion on this or anything other issue any more than I consider Mitt Romney a real Conservative. But I digress...

Instead of responding directly to your supposition, I'll just let the words of other Black people speak to the subject matter at hand.

From theRoot.com (and in case you were wondering, it's a Black online news magazine):

"The Faux Outrage Over Biden's 'Chains' Quote"

His choice of words were far from appropriate for the occasion, but the gist of what he was attempting to communicate was right on.

...

Once again diversion from the reich! Smokin' Joe told the truth, and the typical GOTP response is not with truth, but a faux diversion! Truth is Mittens/Ryan want to return to an unrestrained Wall Street, the same hustlers that got bailed out in 2008- 2009 from their own shenanigans which almost took the economy over the cliff! And they're just angry that someone had the nerve to tell the truth!

...

Outrage??? Not in the black community, not even in most of the white community. In fact the only people ranting are the white racists.

...

Biden doesn't get a pass because the "FEAR" is REAL!!

We have Republicans changing voting laws once they got into power in 2010.

And the reason??? The NON-existence voter fraud.

Yet EVERY organization shows Black/Hispanics and the poor will be the ones who pay the price of the new voting laws.

So after the record turnout of minorities in 2008, and over one million PLUS LESS White voters, it just so happens when Republicans get into power in 2010 and there is this urgent need to change voting laws???

And THAT'S is NOT taking into account new voting laws that give Republican districts longer voting times and Democratic districts less voting time.

This so called FEAR is NOT in our imagination and it's the reason Biden doesn't get a pass, IT'S REAL!!!!

If you go to the site, you'll find comments both for and against but mostly for considering the number of retweets the entire article received. While I can agree that VP Biden could have and should have choosen his words differently, the essence of what he was trying to get across was clearly understood by those who listened to his speech in its entirety instead of focusing on the lone sound bite.

Yes, the essence of the message he was trying to get across was clearly understood.

Biden, a notherner, has no business trying to mock a southern accent while talking to a group of people that included a good percentage of blacks about putting people BACK in chains....

I agree with you caine...it was a dumbass thing for him to say and do....but I dont believe for a sec that biden had any animosity or intent to insult anyone in his statement....it was what he does often...step on his tongue

Gotta disagree about uncle joe. joe meant exactly what he said, said it on purpose, and was merely following the dim party line. Yes, joe overly uses his mouth and disconnects it from his brain ... this one was not gaffe. (all of the lower case letters for the current VP are purposeful)

its was just another episode of the dems class warfare strategy, clearly an attempt to stir up the black vote---but the funny thing is that it seems to have backfired. instead of firing up blacks, he insulted them.
