42% of Americans think selection of Ryan was not a good choice

-choice-191741941.html

In a USA Today/Gallup poll out today Paul Ryan is considered by 42 percent of Americans only a "fair" or "poor" choice for Mitt Romney's vice president— a higher number than that of registered voters who put Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin in the same categories after their selection was announced.

This can't be good for the Romney supporters who were hoping for a big boost. Now you know why us Democrats are delighted with the pick.

How many of that 42% were going to or thinking of voting for Romney?

Biden is one of the least intellectually capable men to ever hold the office. Far less intelligent than even Dan Quayle. Biden uses almost 40 years of experience in government speak to pretend he is intelligent.

he was a loser as a student, he flunked the bar and has been sucking on the public teat for almost all his adult life

no wonder why people like you worship him

It was a great pick, though, like the "ugly girlfriend theory". where average chicks have ugly girl friends so they look better. Without a teleprompter, Obama might just be the dumbest president history of the united states. So Biden, perhaps the dumbest man in the history of the universe, is a great foil.

Boy, you guys never get tired of the 'teleprompter' talking point.

And calling him dumb just discredits you.

Where was the automobile invented?

How many states are there in the USA?

Does the president give the joint chiefs of staff "orders" on what the US military is doing?

I know kindergartners smarter than obama.

That means 58 percent approve of the pick, and they only need 51 percent to win.

No...its just an initial poll of the immediate reaction...things can change. But first impressions are often lasting. I doubt Ryan's numbers will improve when people find out about him.

Well, Mr. Ryan showed some gumption with his budget proposals that a lot of people liked. He's certainly got much more ability to fire up the base than Romeny does.

Shame that Congress would never agree to anything as silly as balancing the budget . . .

You realize that Ryan's budget runs deficits until at least 2040, right?

Yeah, polls are only valid when they show Romney ahead of Obama. I think we've seen the last of those.
I am not getting at any of that logic. What I am saying is that regardless Obama or Romney will have more than that percentage that will not vote for them. So, the 42% is the same number regardless of who the pick is, or who is running at the top. It's a meaningless poll that in actuality has nothing to do with Paul Ryan. It's the partisan line that won't change no matter who it is polled on.

The point is, a certain % of that % of independents, moderates, swing voters don't like him. Game over.

Why would anyone include a "fair" rating in with a "poor" rating...except to get some bigger number than is warranted.

I would hardly consider "fair" to have bad connotations.

It's like saying 100% off all polled had something to say about Ryan.

Yes, it was a "hail-mary"; a play of desperation. The "hail-mary" is a dumb play unless your out of options.... and, some times they work. As a Coloradoan, this one is my favorite:

I personally believe this one will go down as one of the worst "hail-mary" plays in political history, making the Sarah Palin pick look like sound, reasoned thinking. The Ryan pick does two things the Regressives will Regret (soon to be known as the Regretsives):

1) it seals the deal on tying Romney to the Ryan plan; which is something the Obama campaign has been trying to do with inference.
2) it brings the Ryan plan to the public. In that past, this has only be exposed to those paying attention in non-election cycles. Given that 80% of the people favor Medicare [cite coming] and the Ryan plan doesn't exactly balance the budget for quite awhile The Ryan Plan: lots of pain; no real gain), this likely to get the general electorate's "panties in a bunch", which could back-fire on Republican congressional candidates everywhere (an unintended consequence). Up to now, the Ryan plan sounded "like a plan", but with prime time airing, could expose the Con agenda and create a really interesting backlash..... just my 2.5 cents

If it is the same percentage as the overall 42% and being that fair is included into the poll, the Obama is in serious trouble. I am not predicting that he is. Personally, one of the problems with the GOP picking Romney is that there really isn't a good running mate for him. At least not one that will help him significantly to win votes. Figuring that democrats are not going to approve of any GOP VP candidate, and the GOP will largely approve of the candidate, the 42% is just the typical partisan divide. Even when Reagan won in 1984 which is one of the greatest landslides in U.S. history, Reagan did not crack 60% of the popular vote. In fact, the vote against was nearly 42%. This poll is largely insignificant.

LOL!!!

I see you don't mind wearing the mantle of hysterical demagogue.

You DO know that, no matter what Obama, his mouthpieces or you attempt to say about Romney and Ryan's plan, the fact is that Romney will not follow in lockstep with that plan. He will craft his own.

Your whole post is quite irrelevant.

Despite the "hometown" image they try to create, Ryan has spent the last 25 years in Washington. He started there in 1992 right after Graduation. He's a Congressional insider pretending to be a Teaparty newcomer by putting forth a radical Ayn Rand (his idol) inspired budget. He's a Catholic but his budget has been condemned by Catholic bishops as heartless. That's just a few of his weaknesses.

perhaps it is because Congress doesn't believe that the budget should be balanced on the backs of the the working and middle class, which giving trillions in tax cuts to the wealthy.

Let me give you a hint....firing up the base isn't going to win you the election when you alienate everyone except for the far right.

So I guess like everything else Romney says...you can't believe it...because he will shake his etch a sketch and reinvent himself. So when Romney praised Ryan's plan and said it should be implemented, he didn't really mean it?

Sorry, but he married into that family and now owns it. He is not going to be able to shake it.

Moreover, this "Romney will craft his own plan" stuff is a bit laughable. Romney has shown us the boldness and backbone of Gumby. Guys with backbone do not run away from their record (such as "Romneycare") nor change so consistently and blatantly on issues.

He does nothing on his own. In fact, its becoming increasingly clear that he "owned" by Grover Norquist. Mitt fits the Grover criteria perfectly as he apparently still has all 10 of his fingers (and they do call him "mitt") :lamo

This is going to be fun watching this guy being sliced and diced in the coming weeks. It will be like a Roman Gladiator show. Don't worry, it shouldn't be too painful. I expect it will be over by October 1.

LMFAO @ how this article paints Dan Quayle as being such a poor choice to equate Ryan with... and chastises how much lower it is than when Sarah Palin was picked...

Last I checked, Dan Quayle was Vice President of the United States of America... and sometimes Sarah Palin appears on FOX News in front of some Americans...

OH NO IM SO PANICKED 42% of voters rated the pick of Ryan as "fair" or "poor"... and only 40% rated it as "excellent"...

In a different completely unrelated news story...

Great news for the Romney campaign... Just days after announcing his pick of Paul Ryan for VP, 40% of Americans polled think the choice of Paul Ryan as VP was "excellent"... That's almost as much as the categories of "poor" and "fair" combined... This is great news, especially considering how many of those polled didn't even know who he was, and that 45% of Americans currently support Obama/Biden for re-election... Many of those who didn't know who Ryan was, or who thought the pick was "fair" will have plenty of time to make their minds up about Ryan as the conventions begin in a couple weeks, and the he goes toe to toe with Joe Biden in the Vice Presidential debate... and he should really only improve his impression from there...

LMFAO @ Romney's done nothing...

He only created and managed a multi-national business to extreme success that even changed the industry he was in... balancing their budget annually for 18 years... Went back to his former company, and saved their bacon fixing their fiscal crisis for 2 years... Then went and rescued the Salt Lake City games from their budget shortfalls, turning it into one of the most profitable Olympic Games ever... Then, turned what was the largest deficit in MA state history of nearly $3B into a $2B rainy day fund within 2 years of being in office, balancing each of his 4 budgets while in office...

Yeah... you're so right... Romney's never done a thing... and would have to resort to just submitting Ryan's budget, because he could never figure out how to do that on his own... :roll

Oh, did I forget in there that he passed the first ever successful universal healthcare system in the country, that did not raise costs on the government, or require a massive overarching beaurocracy to mange it? Did I also leave out that he oversaw the completion of the largest construction project in US History, getting it done in less time and for less cost than was projected at the time, even recovering funds for faulty work or exaggerated overestimates?

Wait... now that I typed all that it actually seems like he's accomplished quite a lot...

OK, I misspoke. When I said he has done "nothing", I was referring to his candidacy for POTUS, not to his resume.

You are right in that my statement was too vague. I was thinking more in terms of he has done "nothing to articulate a real plan for economic growth".... I was intending to refer to his articulation of his vision (if there is one)... responding to the notion that we can ignore Ryan's plan, because Mitt will have his own. Yes my statement was vague. I was not trying to challenge his overall resume; just his job as a candidate for POTUS in terms of articulating a vision. Yes, I was not precise where I should have been.

You didn't misspeak, you were flat out wrong... Romney knows exactly how to create growth... and he's articulated it... even wrote a book about it and did a speaking tour around the country in which he articulated it...

Many have caught on to that...

Other's were always just defeatist in nature in regards to Mitt Romney's intention, and have just dismissed him off since he's a Republican... and no matter what he says they concoct random yet flawed attempts to miscategorize him as this or that...

Since you're in the latter, I guess you likely haven't seen any of these speeches...

Nor would you give credit to someone who has balanced budgets for 27 years as the chief executive or businesses, non-governmental agencies, and a government... to actually have the ability to balance a budget... you just dismiss it off...

So what's your great alternative?

Let me ask you... what budget would the president propose? The one that's been in a persistent $1.2T deficit... Or the one where he presumes the ability to pass his supposed tax on the rich generates an additional $150B in revenue, and we cut that $1.2T deficit down to $1T... ? Or the one where he lets the Bush Tax Cuts expire, and there's a huge tax hike across the board and there's an additional $300B in revenue... so the $1.2T deficit shrinks to $900B...

For someone who earlier in the day called Bush the worst president in US History... it's kind of odd to see you supporting a guy who has managed his budget quite poorly in comparison with Bush...
