Why? Because it will refocus the debate. Do you think Mitt Romney would win if the campaign was focused on
1. Bains corruption
2. His lack of diplomatic skills
3. His tax returns he won't release
4. How boring he is.
No, he wouldn't. That is what we would have got if he picked a nobody like Portman. What Romney needed to do is to direct the debate over to other topics. He wants to be able to talk about the economy. Ryan will let him talk about the economy.
But won't Ryan make eldery run for the hills. No, they won't. We are not voting for Paul Ryan, we are voting for Mitt Romney who has distanced himself from the Ryan budget. Some stupid people think that is a sign he is already in trouble, but it was done on purpose as Romney want to talk about the budget, but not scare voters that he will actually implement it. Secondly, many seniors supports the overall message of the Ryans budget.
But shouldn't you try to move towards the centre to take the independent voters like swarchenegger did in California? That is a loser mentality, and will get you nowhere. Did Obama win by adopting republican positions? And how come Reagan did so well, while moderate republican candidates did not. The reason so many get it wrong, especially liberals who would love to see Republicans adopt all Democrat positions, is their simplified view of politics.
Some things to remember
1. People vote for people who inspire them. They do not just vote for political positions. Most people do not know the specific content of the Ryans plan.
2. Republicans are not an uniform group. If you noticed, some Republicans are liberterians. Some republicans are social conservatives, some are fiscal conservatives, some are both. Some claim they are independent. Some people are poor or don't care. Only a simpleton believes that right-wing voters, are guaranteed voters.
3. Republican enthusiasm is very important. If Republican voters don't care much, then they are not going to talk to friends, and they are not going to campaign.
This site proves my point. How many threads have there been about Romneys tax records? Paul Ryan directs the debate away from Bain, tax record, etc. to Ryans tax plan. But reality is, Ryans tax plan has the support of 1/3 of the electorate, and more people support the overall message. However, Obama do not have a budget, and Romney is not going to implement the Ryans budget. This brings a lot of opportunities.
