A bust of the former prime minister once voted the greatest Briton in history, which was loaned to George W Bush from the Government's art collection after the September 11 attacks, has now been formally handed back.

The bronze by Sir Jacob Epstein, worth hundreds of thousands of pounds if it were ever sold on the open market, enjoyed pride of place in the Oval Office during President Bush's tenure.

But when British officials offered to let Mr Obama to hang onto the bust for a further four years, the White House said: "Thanks, but no thanks."

Diplomats were at first reluctant to discuss the whereabouts of the Churchill bronze, after its ejection from the seat of American power. But the British Embassy in Washington has now confirmed that it sits in the palatial residence of ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald, just down the road from Vice President Joe Biden's official residence. It is not clear whether the ambassador plans to keep it in Washington or send it back to London.

American politicians have made quoting Churchill, whose mother was American, something of an art form, but not Mr Obama, who prefers to cite the words and works of his hero Abraham Lincoln. Indeed a bust of Mr Lincoln now sits in the Oval Office where Epstein's Churchill once ruled the roost.

As I noted in my previous blog on the subject, however, both The Sunday Telegraph and The Times of London ran major articles back in early 2009 revealing that British officials had made it clear to the White House that President Obama could keep the Churchill bust in the Oval Office. In other words, it was the White House’s firm decision to return the bust, and no request was made by the British to have it back. This looks awfully like a deliberate snub of America’s closest friend and ally, and it would be good for the White House to acknowledge the truth, rather than continue to spin a blatantly false and misleading line.

Re: Obama insults our ally England.how does this play with voters..

This is all about as silly as running around claiming every word Romney made was a 'gaffe.' I have a suggestion. Maybe its time for us to start acting like grown-ups and expecting the same from our allies. If people are offended by Obama returning the bust of Churchill, then maybe they ought to be more LIKE Churchill and man the **** up. If people are upset for Romney answering a question about the Olympics, those people too should do a serious ****ing scrotum check.

This is total BS, the bust loaned to President Bush was removed on January 20, 2009 and President Obama had nothing to do with it. This myth is three ****ing years, give it a ****ing rest.

Dan Pfeiffer said:
Since my post on the fact that the bust of Winston Churchill has remained on display in the White House, despitste assertions to the contrary, I have received a bunch of questions -- so let me provide some additional info. The White House has had a bust of Winston Churchill since the 1960’s. At the start of the Bush administration Prime Minister Blair lent President Bush a bust that matched the one in the White House, which was being worked on at the time and was later returned to the residence. The version lent by Prime Minister Blair was displayed by President Bush until the end of his Presidency. On January 20, 2009 -- Inauguration Day -- all of the art lent specifically for President Bush’s Oval Office was removed by the curator’s office, as is common practice at the end of every presidency. The original Churchill bust remained on display in the residence. The idea put forward by Charles Krauthammer and others that President Obama returned the Churchill bust or refused to display the bust because of antipathy towards the British is completely false and an urban legend that continues to circulate to this day.

Truly desperate. Three years late and several cents short on a dollar. That bird flew the coop long since, the horse has gone and the stable door rusted in place. Your bolt is shot. Only the Tory press noticed at the time, the public rose as one in a searing display of sublime indifference. One **** they did not give, then or now.

It's never too late to bring back an Obama gaffe from the past. We might even dig up more Rev. Wright videos from years gone by.

Re: Obama insults our ally England.how does this play with voters..

but let me guess they cared about Mitt saying "he doesnt know if security is ready or not ".....

can we trade you Obama for the bust back?

well we care here.. our President is loser... you can have him

What he said was that "it was disconcerting" Mitt never misses a chance to sound upper class and out of touch.

Well you've only got until November. I think you've shot your wad already and the polls are trending Obama. Keep it up and it will be a landslide. Mitters is folding as we speak.

Re: Obama insults our ally England.how does this play with voters..

by desperate do you mean "on target" ??so why did Obama return the bust of Churchill and insult our best ally...

why?... it was a gracious gift.. Obama is classless..

was he trying to trade it to the queen for his IPOD back with his speaches on it that he gave the Queen?...

If you don't like it, why don't you apply to be Obama's interior decorator?

Re: Obama insults our ally England.how does this play with voters..

Obama 1.)Does not believe in the theory of communism meaning he believes we should move towards socialism, then establish the dictatorship of the proletariat, then move towards communism and the state will wither away.
2.)He is clearly not using the Marxist analysis on analyzing the world and capitalism
3.)He is given money from private corporations and etitites to his campaign
4.)He gave private corporations federal money to keep afloat a private corporations

Do i need to go on?

You're wasting your time. I've tried numerous times to educate those who are so politically illiterate that they think Obama's a socialist or a communist or a Marxist or a fascist (who don't get that these 4 things are all different things), but it's a waste of time. They're not interested in learning or real understanding. To them, those words have no meaning other than a generic "bad guy enemy." Their level of understanding is that of a kid watching a cartoon.

Oh, btw, your analysis is correct, of course.

So why do you hate Abraham Lincoln, Travis?

Wow just wow. Travis has outdone himself. The sweet smell of right wing desperation permeates this thread like a rotten egg fart in an elevator.

You people certainly don't deserve the bust back, since your current politics aren't worthy of Winston Churchhill.

Did "desperate" go out of the Democratic talking points wire this week? Seems like a popular term.

Yes. I can get you on the mailing list if you want. :)

Churchill was a half-American racist alcoholic who invented gassing Kurds. The bust was a loan to another alcoholic mass Iraqi murderer..

You gonna apologise for Romney's ignorant comments about the Olympics? I'm telling you, that's much bigger news in the UK than is a bust of Churchill.

Re: Obama insults our ally England.how does this play with voters..

One of England's best wrote a play about this

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.

I actually didn't know about the bust. Then again, I probably forgot. Nevertheless, the UK's opinion of the American government has greatly improved under Obama...

...and as for the Polish death camps, many of the locals were pretty glad to be rid of the Jews...

Laughable. You used to not be such a COMPLETE mindless hack.

Re: Obama insults our ally England.how does this play with voters..

Laughable. You used to not be such a COMPLETE mindless hack.

You, on the other hand, have never been anything but a hack.

Personally, I couldn't give a toss about what Romney said about the Olympics or what Obama did with his White House objets d'art. The OP was just a puerile bit of petty electioneering. I stand by my comment that Romney's comments made bigger waves than the bust, however. Check out the British media and see which got the coverage.

So you're saying Romney did a good thing by... deflecting 'blame' for the Olympics from the British government onto... himself? His words may have had some truth in them, but diplomatically-speaking he did mess up a little.

Re: Obama insults our ally England.how does this play with voters..

Not only UK, but he has also betrayed all other US allies like Israel etc. He's working for the downfall of America.

You keep making Thunderously foolish statements on every topic. Hmmm...I wonder why.

No...what I am saying is there is NO REASON for ANYONE to be upset because what he said was accurate, informed, and not even a little bit 'insulting'. Unless of course you are a liberal moron looking for something to be upset over (the yang to the OPs yin re the Churchill bust).

Well no **** it got the most coverage. There, just as here, their media is liberally slanted. There, like here, their liberal ideologues wet themselves looking for things to get twisted about. And buy all means...we can compare posting history to see which of us is more likely to mindlessly defend our 'slant'. Start in THIS thread. Go.

Please, don't try and undermine me because of your ignorance about my views and intentions. You didn't think it was insulting, but a lot of people thought it was. It is a fact that the British press gleefully pounced on Romney, it is a fact that 'Mitt the Twit' and 'Romneyshambles' trended on Twitter. And it is a fact that Boris Johnson was cheered on by thousands of people as he baited a fellow Conservative. Don't try and paint your black-and-white 'liberal or conservative' view of America onto the rest of the world.
