From the rabidly-right-wing New York Times and CBS:

Nearly two out of three registered voters believes that President Obama's policies contributed to some degree to the economic downturn, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll.

Thirty-four percent say Mr. Obama's policies contributed significantly to the downturn, and another 30 percent say they contributed to some degree. Thirty-five percent say the president's policies contributed little or not at all to the downturn...

Forty-six percent of registered voters - including more than half of independents - say Mr. Obama's economic policies will never improve the economy. Thirty-four percent, including 31 percent of independents, say his policies will improve the economy if given more time. Just 17 percent believe his policies are currently improving the economy.

When it comes to their personal financial situation, more voters believe the president's policies will make their economic situation worse (39 percent) than improve it (26 percent). Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney fares better: While 25 percent say his policies will make their economic situation worse, a higher percentage - 32 percent - say his policies will improve their economic standing....

It is, of course, worth noting that a larger percentage of voters continue to blame Bush's policies as having contributed to the Economic Downturn. But, given that I am one of those voters, I'm not sure how much opportunity that gives to the Obama campaign to make headway on these numbers by trying to draw connections between Romney and Bush.

Mr. Obama's overall approval rating stands at 44 percent, with 46 percent disapproving. His approval rating on the economy is just 39 percent - 55 percent disapprove - and his approval rating on foreign policy is 41 percent...

Seven in 10 Americans say the economy is in bad shape. While 24 percent say it is getting better - down from 33 percent in April - 30 percent say it is getting worse. That marks the highest percentage who say the economy is getting worse since December.

Two in five Americans say they are very concerned someone in their household will lose their job.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why we are going to continue to hear all about how Romney is a Mean Old Rich Guy Who Wants To Hurt The Middle Class To Help The Rich. 'Cause running on a record like that is suicide.

well done, Fox News, well done

While people still blame Republican policies for causing the downturn, Fox has done a great job at smudging the fact the Republicans have sandbagged every attempt to fix it and simultaneously blaming the Dems for not fixing things fast enough.

Re: 2/3rds of Registered Voters Think Obama's Policies Contributed to Economic Downt

What percentage of voters think the economy is going to do what it is going to do pretty much regardless of what a President wants or does?

Re: 2/3rds of Registered Voters Think Obama's Policies Contributed to Economic Downt

Just one question, does a poll make it true?

Re: 2/3rds of Registered Voters Think Obama's Policies Contributed to Economic Downt

No. It just means that it belongs in the Presidential Election forum :).

Good, it doesn't mean it's true. Follow up, should we care about what is true?

A poll can be a measure of how people might vote.

If you have a point to make, and what is your investment in this matter?

What matters is whether people think Romney would do better or worse -- not just how they think Obama has done.

Of course we can all cherry pick polls to show what we want.... Obama Leads Romney On Economy Improvement: Poll - Business Insider

Re: 2/3rds of Registered Voters Think Obama's Policies Contributed to Economic Downt

A poll can be a measure of how people might vote.

it only measures how the 1200 or so who were polled might vote. a poll of 1200 says absolutely nothing about 330,000,000

That empty complaint would hold water if the Democrat Party didn't have full control of the government for 2 solid years.....w/ a supermajority.

Its called a random sample and CAN be a good representation of how a group of people will vote. We do not have 330 million registered voters in this country.

thats what they claim. but the rules of statistics say otherwise. pick up a Stat 101 textbook. It will tell you that a representative sample must be at least 5% of the population to be significant.

Polls are designed to influence public opinion, not to report on it.

Re: 2/3rds of Registered Voters Think Obama's Policies Contributed to Economic Downt

People are going to be shocked come election time. Obama and the Dem's will lose in a landslide, you can't have an economy this bad and unemployment over 8% and expect a second chance.

Re: 2/3rds of Registered Voters Think Obama's Policies Contributed to Economic Downt

Oh dear, while most know that I very much dislike Obama, in this case, I will have to defend him against falshoods.

The factors that caused the meltdown have been in place for decades. Just as it is wrong to say Bush caused the meltdown (he didn't, his failure was to not take actions on things that previously existed, none actually came about during his time), it is wrong to blame it on Obama. Yes, he was a member of a congress that took no actions to alieve the factors leading to meltdown, but that hardly makes him responsible for them. It would be far more accurate to say that his policies have not aided greatly in recovering from the meltdown, not causing it. Did his policies and actions cause greater unemployment in some parts of the country? I would have to say yes, but this is in the area of lack of recovery, not causing the meltdown.

Blame him for lack of recovery and damaging the economic future of our Country all you want, but I cannot support blaming him for something he did not do.

Re: 2/3rds of Registered Voters Think Obama's Policies Contributed to Economic Downt

I see your point. But can Obama be blamed for not doing something he should've done?

You fall under the fallacy of assuming the two parties are the same. They aren't. Republicans vote in lock-step, like the kids in the Pink Floyd video. Democrats, on the other hand, come in all stripes and vote accordingly.

Don't be silly. Polls have proven to be remarkably accurate in predicting the outcome of elections.

Yup, that's why we have an "economics" forum, where this question is debated rather endlessly :).

Sure, I don't see why not, but I have a tendency to ask if he should of know it. Hindsight is 20/20, foresight is usually around 20/many billions.

So have my bets at the track. Pollsters are good gamblers, nothing more.

Perhaps you should reveiw the Congressional voting record before say this. In the House, Dems seem to be less likely to jump the isle, but when they do, a lot of them do. In the Senate, there seems to a few from both sides that cross the isle on a regular basis, beyond them, there seems to be little give or take from either side.

Hmmm, seems like the dems voted in lockstep for obamacare, in the dead of night on Christmas eve with no debate allowed and no one allowed time to actually read the bill.

What did the Republicans do to "sandbag" it.

Elaborate so I can laugh at you. Obama hasn't even met with his jobs council in 6 months.
