Not using a teleprompter lets Obama be more spontaneous on the stump. Since making the shift, the president at times has ad-libbed remarks while playing off his supporters’ reactions, something that had been difficult with a teleprompter.

“It’s become a crutch,” Tobe Berkovitz, a professor of communications at Boston University who specializes in political communications, said in describing Obama’s use of the teleprompter.

When Obama is "off teleprompter" we get quotes like "If you own a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."

What else could possibly go wrong?

Don't do it Obama. You sound much better with it than without it. If you want to do it, do it after the election so that you are ready for the book circuit and the touring circuit and every other thing our ex-presidents get to do.

He has to get ready for the debates so he needs to practice NOT using his teleprompter. Between Obama not using one and Mitt these debates ought to be entertaining!

This might be the dumbest GOP talking point. Do they think the public is so dumb as to think Obama is the only President who used a teleprompter? The teleprompter is a ubiquitous part of the media. Every person who has been on TV has used one. It's likes complaining about prewritten speeches.

This talking point is like a geiger counter for detecting partisan hacks.

Well for starters, those words are taken out of context. He said: "Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." He was referencing roads and bridges not business.

No they were not taken out of context. The full context of the speech makes it quite clear. He actually looks worse in full context

In the liberal world, in Obama's world, you apparently don't own your own success

The right wing has had some pretty pathetic attacks on Obama.

The Teleprompter card is one of many and it's not even funny either.

The only time it was pretty funny was when he addressed a grade school class with them, that was a chuckle but other than that... it's an idiotic attack.

He better keep his hands on that thing. His fascist views of government leak out whenever his handlers don't have a prepared speech for him. You can only hide so much "rape the rich" rhetoric behind his usual "government must control your puny little lives" droll.

I think it's absolutely hilarious

Without his trusty teleprompter he's a stuttering gaffe machine. Obama just completely changed the dynamic of the election with his off teleprompter slip up revealing his rabid Marxism. It doesn't surprise me that Obamabots want to try and downplay it or claim it's not in context. We heard it. We know what he said. All the liberal emotional spin in the world won't change it.

Presidents should write their speeches on a piece of paper, because that is somehow inherently better. Or they should spend hour upon hour memorizing a speech instead of, you know, governing, because that also makes sense.

Let's face it. The right wing has long since lost perspective on what the words "marxist," "socialist," and "fascist" mean. They've come up with their own definition, which is "BAD MAN DOES BAD THINGS"
