LMFAO @ defending it's cost inefficiency by saying it doesn't make up the majority of the labor force... That's an unrelated topic... Plus, why did you focus on private sector only? 37% (over 1/3rd) of the public sector is unionized... So when you talk about inefficient use of taxpayer funds, you gotta question the use of unions...
Guess what... I'm a union employee, and a public employee... I know how inefficient it is...
There's no incentive for me to do better, because I won't ever get a raise, promotion, demotion, etc. based off performance... It is all done by seniority, and paced out through cost of living increases... The only incentive is for me to mope around doing a half-assed job, take advantage of all the small perks, like break times, and just exist until it's my time to be a senior member who can take even more vacation time...

The remaining problem in the auto industry is the cost of labor, as the result of the unions... We can't compete with the foreign companies which can pay $20-$40 less per hour than American companies... and any attempts to bridge that gap are thwarted by the unions... ]
Yet, this president, with an opportunity to break up the power of the union, instead strengthened the unions negotiating position, and helped them gain solvency, so much they were able to purchase a sizeable portion of stock in the company...
