All this noise about Romney's professional like is another reminder why a) most people hate and distrust ALL politicians and b) why it is just about impossible to get truly competent people to run for office. Let alone the presidency.
It seems a simple truth that the process simply does not allow for a true vetting of ideas and then allowing a political race allowing an informed public to choose among two contrasting visions. What to do about taxes, how to fix the economy, how to fix our health care system in a nation of 300+ million with a GDP of nearly $16 trillion is to complex to fit on a bumper sticker, too much work for TV newsreaders to get up to speed to understand, and can not be said within a 30 second ad which is all the effort the average American is willing to devote to the process.
So we are left to slick political aides who can paint a portrait of their adversary and with enough repetition and make it stick with some folks. And some folks is all that matters in a country where a few "swing" states will be decided by a few "swing" counties that may add to a few hundred thousand.
It happened to Kerry. No matter what people think of him, just going to Vietnam was something most kids, especially college educated and with some income in the family did everything they could to avoid. He let the swiftboaters put a label on him and he not wash off the slime come election time. The the windsurfing photo put it over the edge essentially saying he was some rich kid wimp.
Obama and team are doing the same thing now. They know it isn't true, but who cares. Kerry earned his purple hearts the hard way and the slick political aides were able to turn him into a wimp.
If Romney is not willing to get as dirty as the Obama campaign we can fast forward for the next 4 years with Obama as president.
Maybe political parties will finally learn their lesson. Don't expect to win the presidency with a candidate who is only willing to fight with his/her ideas about the direction of the country.
You need a Bush Jr. or Obama willing to stoop to any level to accomplish the only thing that counts, winning.
We have not really entered the official campaign season which people often say starts with the convention and Romney may have found he does not have the stomach or inclination to win in this way.
Can we have a sustaining great nation if this is the direction of 21st century elections in America?
