Rick Santorum Drops Out: GOP Presidential Candidate Suspends 2012 Presidential Campaign (LIVE VIDEO)

In a surprise decision Tuesday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) will announce that he is suspending his presidential campaign, The Huffington Post's Jon Wardhas learned and several other outlets have reported. The Pennsylvania Republican had taken a break from the campaign trail for several days to tend to his ailing daughter, Bella. He had pledged to continue campaigning through the upcoming Pennsylvania primary. But the combination of his daughter's sickness and recent poll numbers showing him possibly losing his home state apparently prompted the early departure. The announcement is expected to come during an address in Gettysburg, Penn. According to Yahoo! News, Santorum called Mitt Romney earlier in the day to inform him of his decision to suspend his campaign.Santorum's decision removes any lingering doubt that Romney will end up the Republican presidential nominee. The former Massachusetts Governor held aseemingly insurmountable delegate lead prior to Santorum's departure, though his campaign was planning on spending between one and two million dollars against Santorum in Pennsylvania.

Video at link. It's about time.

He had no chance of wining in the general. This is a weak crop of GOP candidates, but he was perhaps the weakest in the general. Plays well with stanch conservatives, but not in the general. Then again, I'm not sure any of them won't struggle.

Well, there goes any chance of the me voting for a Republican this fall. Not just for POTUS, but for any office; since it's obvious to me that the "Party" put pressure on him and Gingrich to get out of the way.

he most likely ran out of money, since old romney can outspend him.

He put up a good fight in the primary. I hope his time with his daughter is not tainted by the feeling of the declined campaign, but I'm pretty certain it won't be.

Santorum is out

He's getting ready to speak in Gettysburg any moment.

The people voted that way. It wasn't just the party apparatus.

Holy **** I did not see this coming.

I mean really? And Ron Paul and Newt are still in?

Wow.

And I would never vote for him, but for the record, I wish his daughter the best of luck in her recovery.

Re: Santorum is out

:rofl

His Gettysburg Address, eh?

Re: Santorum is out

Yep, and with him goes any chance of me voting for ANY Republicans this fall. Looks like I'll be voting on the Ballot Questions and leaving the rest of the paper blank unless I can find a decent third party POTUS candidate to vote for.

BREAKING: Santorum to suspend campaign – CNN Political Ticker - CNN.com Blogs

Wow, I did not see this coming. It makes sense since he was tumbling in the Pennsylvania polls, this saves him losing in his home state which was a very real possibility. Michael Steele yesterday made the interesting comment that in 8 years Santorum will still be 3 years younger than Romney is now.

Either way, I cannot support ANY candidate from ANY party that would nominate the worthless waste of flesh and oxygen known as Willard "Mitt" Romney for office. Especially not after seeing his four year "reign" here in Massachusetts.

That's your choice. I'm joining the Republicans this time against my former inklings.

Re: Santorum is out

Wow indeed. And I'll admit, I'm doing a little tap dance.

Will be interesting to see where this goes from here. Does Newt drop or does he try to plug along? How many of Santorum's people defect to Newt if he stays in, and how many just don't vote in the primary? Also interesting is Ron Paul. Does he stay in and continue like in 2008? And, if so, does he do like he did in 2008 (IE mostly inconsiquential) or is it like Virginia where despite every reason for Romney to crush him Paul still managed a respectable showing?

Interesting developments

-edit-

Ahh, I hadn't realized his young daughter had been hospitalized recently. While politically I have strong problems with the man, he seems like an honest and decent guy at his core. While I didn't want to see him get the ticket, if the family issues is what cause the campaign suspension that's unfortunate. I hope his daughter is doing okay.

Careful. Like the unnamed Senator in your quote there; if you give up your Principles you may as well be dead.

Quoted for fail!!!!!

And will do Redress.

Newt was talking about his campaign in the past tense so I don't think he'll stay in much longer either.

Re: Santorum is out

My bad, I was unsure about which forum to post in since it was breaking at that minute.

No, it was fine, just a little better here. You didn't do anything wrong.

Well, it let's Romney focus on the general. No spending time and money in states that won't be in play in the general. It gives republicans time to gather around Romney. It also means that maybe Romney can take a day or two off, which he probably can really use. Things are going to slow down alot not until convention time, late August.
