Discussing reducing the debt in a St. Louis TV interview, Wednesday, Romney said, “Is the program so critical, it’s worth borrowing money from China to pay for it? And on that basis of course you get rid of Obamacare, that’s the easy one. Planned Parenthood, we’re going to get rid of that. The subsidy for Amtrak, I’d eliminate that. The National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities.”

"The more than 90-year-old organization that one in five American women has depended on for health care, and that for many women is their only option for cancer screenings, clinical breast exams, and critical preventive care. Apparently, we can't afford it. Illinois Democrats Rep. Schakowsky, who acknowledged that a president could not force Planned Parenthood to close, said Romney is an “extreme candidate” on women’s issues. Source: Chicago Sun Times

Since planned parenthood gets only about a 3rd of its funding from government sources, Romney wouldn't (as President) have the authority to shut down Planned Parenthood. Since the amount of money they get from the federal budget is a drop in the bucket (roughly $400 million), talking about it like it's a huge contributor to our debt burden is beyond stupid. Since this is coming from Romney (who is fiscally savvy enough to know better) I have to assume that he's just cynically pandering to the dumber elements within our society.

Santorum's got some competition.

To true, rather Santorum like in comments, which are just going to piss off a lot of women.

I'm sure he means that he'll try to stop funding it through taxpayer dollars. And I'm all for that.

Right. Because it's awful that currently millions of women are getting all kinds of needed medical attention. We should definitely put a stop to that.

Don't stop there buddy. Keep going . Stop all foreign aid from money we don't have. Pull sugar dollar governement contracts including the blank checks given to civilian companies that supply our military.

Keep going buddy, there is a mountain of waste and abuse.

Not put a stop to that.....let them be funded through private dollars instead of taxpayer money.

me too.

but really, the president is powerless ( beyond a veto pen) to stop funding... this is campaign rhetoric meant to pander to a certain base demographic, nothing more, nothing less.

Planned parenthood should not receive any tax payer dollars. That said considering Romney's "past" stance on Abortion I do not believe he wants to eliminate tax payer funding for planned parenthood.

Waste, Abuse, Crony Capitalism and such will not be affected. The priorities are eliminating the Capital Gains tax and saving Mr. Romney's terrible tax burden of 4.5 million dollars. Only then will we be the Land Of The Free.

I don't see a President Romney eliminating taxpayer funds for PP either.

Maybe Obama used some of that superpac money he got to bribe Romney into throwing the election...

Someone should ask Romney if having 11 aircraft carriers and jets the Air Force doesn't want and buying camouflage gear that doesn't camouflage for the Army and Marine Corps and fighting every country in the Middle East is worth borrowing money from China to pay for it.

He should have remained silent. Are far right voters dumb enough to be pandered too when they have better options in Santorum and Gringrich? For the few he'll gain now, he'll lose more in the general.

no, he should do what he does and says what he says... then we, as a nation, get to choose whether or not he gets the job.

everybody, left and right and other, is "dumb enough" to be pandered to... there are no exceptions.... pandering is the means to an end, and it's utilized in every single election campaign across the country.

that's exactly what he said-its about tax dollars. he said the same thing about PBS. There are lots of things people think are "GOOD" but shouldn't be paid for with our tax dollars

THis is just another reason why he wont be president and he'll lose more voters.
De-funding this wont do anything to fix our budget since they get very little from the government in retrospect and the fact that 1 in 5 women have used planned parenthood in their live times at least once makes this idea even more stupid.

on a side note Its funny that people dont like PP because they perform abortion but on the same hand they are more responsible for the prevention of abortion than any org in america also LMAO

I bet 1 in 5 women have also ordered makeup from Sephora. Should we fund that too so that women can mentally feel good about themselves?

Right. Because makeup is totally comparable to healthcare.

It was an exaggeration, dear. My tongue was planted firmly in my cheek.

There are a million faucets going at once in the federal government. You have to start shutting them down one at a time. Military spending is going to go down if we do nothing. Non active combat units spend less than active ones and we ought to have more inactive combat units in the next term. State spending (foreign aid that is) needs some cuts and well, half a million other things. Id be more than happy to hear Romney say he is for cutting every single thing 5% his first year and presenting a budget to that end. It would be a great start.

We do not have the money and he is presenting more serious solutions than the current administration.
