(CNN) - Rick Santorum's three-year-old daughter Isabella, who suffers from a chromosomal condition called Trisomy 18, was admitted to a Philadelphia hospital Saturday.
In a statement, Santorum spokesman Hogan Gidley said the GOP presidential candidate and former Pennsylvania senator would cancel campaign events on Sunday morning.

"Rick and his wife Karen are admitting their daughter Bella to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia this evening," Gidley said. "The campaign will cancel Rick's upcoming Sunday morning Florida campaign schedule. However, Rick intends to return to Florida and resume the campaign schedule as soon as is possible."

Santorum had been slated to appear on NBC's "Meet the Press," as well as make a stop at King Jesus International Ministry in Miami. Santorum has been campaigning in Florida ahead of the state's primary on Tuesday.

Trisomy 18 is caused by extra material from chromosome 18, and is three times more common in girls than boys. Half of patients born with the condition do not survive past the first week of life, according to the National Institutes of Health. Patients who do survive past the first week experience serious medical and developmental problems.

You know I may not agree with Mr. Santorum on very much, I actually hate some of his views to be perfectly honest but my heart goes out to him and his family today and his three year old daughter in particular Isabella who I hope makes a swift and speedy recovery.

Lets pray that things turn out ok.

I'm an atheist so i don't pray, but i do wish her the best.

Dang that sucks, and am wishing the best for his daughter. Human points awarded to Mr. Santorum to having his heart and soul in the right place. There are times in life when personal ambitions take a back seat to greater issues. I can think of at least a couple of candidates running right now who may not have done the same.

Which one? I think even Gingrich would cancel these events if his daughter were hospitalised.

In terms of political dynamics, if Santorum is forced to quit the race over this, then Gingrich stands to get his voters, which would mean a long fight for Romney.

Damn, I hope she is alright.

I would hope so, but I wouldn't put it past him or Romney tbh.

I believe all the candidates would cancel on behalf of a sick Son or Daughter.

I hope she has a speedy recovery.

It's good to believe that, and many would, and have. Some though have continued on while their families were tearing apart, and faced illness. What I am saying is that not all have in the past, and it would not surprise me if Gingrich or Romney would continue on.

I wish him and her the best too, but the fact is that she's not going to just "get well" at least not in the long run. She may recover from whatever she's hospitalized for, but she has Trisomy 18 (Edward's Syndrome) which causes death within a week of birth in half of all the cases, and only a few people with it live to the teen years, and all have pretty severe disabilities and health problems.

It's going to be a tough time for her and her family. She's already a miracle baby, having lived this long.

Yes, she is an amazing baby!

When a child is sick like this case? Can you provide an example since you claimed this? Humanity aside, it's negative politically if the story gets out that a candidate would rather campaign when a child is hospitalised with a serious condition and unknown outcome.

Every situation is different. Neither Gingrich or Romney has a little child at home, and so there's no point in speculating on what either would have done or would do. We have no way of knowing. For that matter, neither do they because they haven't "been there."

But we do know what good parents across the aisles have done in other extreme cases, such as when Gore's son was so terribly injured. It's ugly enough that so many are sitting in severe judgment of the candidates' morality...can we just leave the speculative morality out of the discussion please?
