Newt "Moon Unit" Gingrich

Newt Gingrich promises to build a moon colony by 2020; make it a U.S. state | Technology News Blog - Yahoo! News

Newt wants to colonize the moon, declare it United States' territory, and make it the 51st state?????????????
has the man lost his mind????????????

damn, maybe his ex-wife should have given him an open marriage. maybe it would have kept him from going total loony.

$15 trillion in debt, lookign to cut hundreds of billions in entitlements, and yet this fool wants to colonize the ****ing moon???

how the **** can he claim to be a fiscal conservative?

Newt is a visionary. He has that imagination, insight, and boldness.

Let me explain, Thunder...

A base on the moon provides a permanency and security that is missing from a satellite in near earth orbit. While expensive to start with, tunneling into the moon's surface provides protection and potentially, minerals for refinement. The water isn't exportable, but could provide the basic needs for the human/moonies. 1/6th gravity isn't a lot, but it's more than you get in space, and may be enough to prevent much of the physical deterioration that occurs in a zero-G environment.

If the moon also has mineral resources suitable for mining & refining, it could potentially serve as a shipyard for building all orbiting space craft and extra-earth ships to be used for exploration within our solar system and maybe even beyond. The energy savings if you don't have to build something that has to climb out of earth's gravity well is phenomenal.

no, he is a hypocrite.

you can't claim to be a fiscal conservative, and then talk about colonizing the moon and making it the 51st state.

I can tell a lot of you aren't too impressed by space exploration, but don't take the fun away from the rest of us. NASA's budget, as a percentage of total Federal spending, peaked at 5.5% in 1966. It's currently about half a percent, and hasn't broken 1% since '74. Small enough for you luddites to ignore. With that attitude we would have never accomplished the great strides in exploration and industrialization, with the accompanying increase in quality of life, that we have seen over the past 500 years or so.

Bless Newt trying to get back to the glory days, " if we can just go back to the moon everything will be better it will be like it used to be you'll see, you'll all see"

He's got 3 of something, that's for sure.

Don't confuse imagination and boldness with delusions of grandeur.

Insight? For a history teacher, his policy ideas are surprisingly weak, often irrational. 'Kenyan, anti-colonial'

LOL....good one

Sure, he can go ahead and colonize the moon, and then he can go live there, fine with me. Has anyone looked up the possible cost of all that? Sounds super spendy.

THis is just another fake proposal by Gingrich because he's pandering in Florida. Now he's saying that you make prizes for the private sector to fulfill. It's more like Newt "Moon-bat" Gingrich.

To OP, not only did he promise this but he wanted to put mirrors into space to provide light to the dark part of the worlds. Forgive me for no source.

Several previous presidents have given clear missions, and along with funding from Congress, space exploration can go far. I don't see the drive from current leadership.

A realistic and understandable goal is needed.. a mission, intent and purpose. So, some serious commercial incentives need to be dangling in front of potential entrepreneurs and inventors. When you're asking for a huge loan for a commercial space, your investors definitely want to see MlP

Right ... can you imagine what Republicans would say if Obama proposed a $100 billion space mission?

and along with funding from Congress,

But the funding is the thing. On one hand Newt's saying to end wasteful government spending, and then he turns around and wants to spend millions of dollars on this. Where is that money going to come from?

I agree that pure research pays big dividends, but I think there are a LOT of more useful research projects that could be undertaken than one involving a useless lunar base.

The "frontier spirit" is part of who we are as Americans. From the first Pilgrims to the settling of the American West, from Louis and Clark to Neil Armstrong landing on the moon... exploration and discovery are written in to the DNA of American culture.

The argument can always be made that there are better things to spend the money on. It's not like the world was that well off in 1961 either. It's not like they didn't have domestic politics in 1492.

We need to push on in to space.

In the 60s we were in a space race with the Russians.

It astounds me that folks who constantly bitch about government spending happily blow off the hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars this -- literally -- pie-in-the-sky idea would cost.

Butt hay, if it's between curing a couple diseases, or working to resolve the world's energy crisis ... or a really cool moon base!!

2 things here...

1) there's a plan to make pie's in the sky? Literally
2) Butt hay?

It's funny to hear conservatives complain about government spending and then cheer Gingrich's plan of spending more money. The GOP candidates are being exposed for what they truly are, more of the same just with a different letter in front of their name.

You didn't hear Newt's plan for a pie factory in the Sea of Tranquility? The idea is that we will have to ability to humiliate our enemies anywhere on earth by launching pies at them from the moon. Please do your research. ;)

2) Butt hay?

A vestige from another forum.

Gingrich's plan is to use prize money to give private industry an incentive to reach the moon. Harly hundreds of billions.

So ... really? When Republicans are fixated on spending cuts and fiscal austerity, why did Newt promise that he would build a permanent manned station on the Moon and launch a manned mission to Mars ... by his second term? Surely the price tag of these items must be in the tens, if not hundreds of billions of dollars?

It's going to run on ethanol.

Because he knows Global Warming is real and he wants to build the ultimate doomsday survival bunker.

See, Newt figures that he and collection of women will hang out there for a century or so, procreating like rabbits, and creating a newt master race....

So increased government spending is ok as long as it is a GOP president that does it huh?
