AdamT, et al,
John Bolton is rather snobbish; with most of us being little people --- well beneath him socially: not warranting any serious consideration either in manners or in our ideas. Only he is deserving of serious consideration. Work with him for 5 minutes and just observe how he addresses subordinates, and how he treats his staff and you will understand.
He is not a model of leadership. It is one of the reasons why he couldn't get confirmation as the Ambassador to the UN.
(COMMENT)
Relative to Newt Gingrich suggesting that John Bolton be SECSTATE --- I can only assume that Newt G wants to intentionally create a climate of further anguish and discontent not only within the State Department, but with every other country (friend and ally alike).
This is not to suggest that the culture within the Department of State needs to be adjusted; I believe it does. But the Department needs a much more positive leader (alla Colin Powell style), rather than the disruptive influence that shadows John Bolton.
I'm not sure that Newt Gingrich is even a worthy candidate for President. He doesn't seem to have any of the Imhotep type qualities that America needs today in repairing the Infrastructure of America, rebuilding our industrial capacity, improving our economy, making education more affordable, and furthering scientific discovery. If he doesn't have any more of a suggesting that what his website suggests, he couldn't possibly have a handle on how the Department of State is going to change the image of America.
My opinion is that the little clip of Newt, is merely babble and political hype, design to sound Presidential like; but really saying nothing. Yes the culture of the State Department needs changed, but who didn't already know that. Yes, we need to be a little stronger in the diplomatic realm --- but we also need to have a President that is not going to put the US in such a position that the diplomatic corp needs to beg for cooperation from other nations. We shouldn't make promises and commitments that we can't afford to keep or accomplish on our own. This, in my opinion, is where Newt G loses it as a leader of change.
Einstein once said, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." John Bolton does not only come from the era of the "same kind of thinking" that created Americas problem of today, --- he is one of the problems. Newt G is merely suggesting that we fall back on some of the same losers that got us here.
Most Respectfully,
R

OMFG, you've got to be kidding. I can't think of a less diplomatic person in America. If the goal is to scare off anyone to the left of Atilla the Hun, this is a great start.
And WTF is an entrepeurial state department? "Yo, we need 5% of your GDP to ... eh ... *protect* you from missiles, if ya' know what I mean. Right Rocko?"
