Election 2012: Generic Republican 48%, Obama 42%

The Republican "establishment" has looked at the early polls and come to the conclusion that Romney is the one and only GOP candidate with any chance of defeating Obama in the 2012 General Election. They also realize that Romney's campaign has stalled and that he's considered "too liberal" by most conservatives.

The problem facing Republican "insiders" is how to "eliminate" such popular but "unelectable" candidates like Cain and now Gingrich from the primaries, paving the way for Romney's "coronation" at the Republican Convention.

Bush's elimination of McCain as a contender during the 2000 Republican Presidential Primary in South Carolina provides the "blueprint" of just how ruthless the GOP can be.

Great post, great points.

Keep in mind, Newt is power broker himself, with access to all the operatives, dirty tricks, and play books.

The old 'Push Polling' that took down McCain--Newt will see that coming, if not doing it himself on Romney.

Here's an easy Push-poll call for Romney: "Are you concerned the Mormon practice of polygamy will become common place should Gov. Romney become President?" -- Who knows, maybe the bible belt will go for it. It is, after all, traditional marriage.

a generic republican is still winning according to

Election 2012: Generic Presidential Ballot - Rasmussen Reports™

i think this is going to stay like this and get even worse for Obama when the GOP pick a candidate!

Once again, this is all well and good, but more importantly pathetically irrelevant. Yes, Obama probably loses to the generic republican presidential candidate. Fortunately for Obama and the Democrats, there is no generic republican candidate.

Generic republican candidates have never flip-flopped on issues; they have no voting or legislation record which is inconsistent with what they are telling the public now; they do not make fools of themselves in debates; they have never had affairs; they are squeaky clean. The problem for Republicans is they have no generic candidate (though Huntsman comes close). They only have Romney, Gingrich and a cast of lesser clowns (or greater clowns, depending on one's perspective)... and none of those clowns will win.
