President Obama now essentially ties, 43% to 42%, a "generic" Republican candidate when U.S. registered voters are asked whom they are more likely to vote for in the presidential election next year. This marks a change from October and September, when the Republican candidate was ahead, and underscores the potential for a close presidential race in the year ahead.

Thats a huge boost...hes been way behind in a generic matchup for months

Obama Back to Even With "Generic" Republican Candidate

Obama may indeed have hit bottom a few months ago and is climbing back now. That is really bad news for the GOP.

For my part, I sense a comeback and more support now for him that in the summer right after the debt ceiling debacle.

I'd imagine that those running are affecting this poll now. The poll can say generic, but people will think of the actual candidates I'd imagine.

I think your right...but a few months ago it was 47-38 obama losing to a generic gop....the teaparty and their far right stance on everything is having a impact finally. I keep saying this ad nauseum...america does not like the far left or the far right...and punishs them every time.
Theres another portion to this...The flock of americans are now becoming aware just how rich the rich have become at their expense..while theyve lost everything...They are aware what our corporations have done to them by sending all decent paying jobs to china for a buch...these are no secrets anymore..and the GOP taxcuts for jobs is a known bs story...no one believes that crap anymore..its NOT TRUE...

Also, for anyone interested, RealClearPolitics - President Obama vs. Republican Candidates. Obama is beating everyone, but Romney, and even then Obama only loses in two polls. Yet, when we look at this link RealClearPolitics - Election 2012 - 2012 Republican Presidential Nomination we see that Cain is the front runner. It should be an interesting next few months.

It should be noted that absolutely none of the candidates are doing as well against Obama as "Generic Republican".

Where the hell is T-Paw when you need him? It doesn't get much more generic than that.

Yep, which is why I say this is looking like 2004. The Republicans think Obama is done that it won't matter who they put up against him.

The generic candidate has no flaws, no scandals, no past decisions coming back to haunt him... This candidate is infinitely more appealing than any actual person ever could be. Actual people are much more complicated than a partisan checklist of ideas.

Yeah, the generic candidate polls are a very weird deal. I think what happens more or less is that early on people answering the poll think of their ideal Republican candidate. Like Perry supporters are thinking Perry, Cain supporters are thinking Cain, Christie supporters are thinking about Christie, etc. People who don't like any of them picture some modern version of Eisenhower or Dole or Reagan or whatever they're into. As it becomes more clear who the actual candidate will be, they think of that person. So, at this point it's pretty obvious that it's going to be Romney, so the "generic" Republican candidate is polling the same as Romney. He now is the generic Republican.

What happened to the party of ruthless? There used to be a time that the GOP would crucify and crush without mercy it's opponents. These days, they seem to have a penchant for giving their opponents new life. But don't bother them right now. They are extremely busy, attempting to nominate the next Jimmy Carter.

He's not climbing back. The pollsters changed their methodology to make it apepar that way in attempt to skew voter opinion.

Polls mean nothing. Ever poll in the country had Kerry beating Bush by 10 points in 2004. How did that election turn out?

Reall. I dont even see one having kerry win by 5

RealClear Politics - Polls

obama will win. It wont be a landslide like 08 but it will be close. I think he will win all the gore states + ohio.

My prediction.
