CNBC Republican Debate 11/9/11

Pretty much a done deal after tonight; its Mitt. Republicans should save their money and cancel the primaries.

I wouldnt count cain out just yet

I wouldnt count cain out just yet

Herman Cain never had much of a chance to begin with, and his inept handling of the sexual harassment allegations will certainly sink him. Not to mention the fact that he has almost no campaign or organization in any of the early-voting states, and spent the last month on a book tour.

Unless one of the other real candidates (Perry, Huntsman, Gingrich) does something to improve their standing in the polls dramatically in the next couple months, I have a tough time seeing a path to the nomination for anyone other than Mitt Romney.

My reaction/opinions:

Romney = Great response to the question about Milton Friedman. Showed he has more business/executive experience than anyone else on the stage. Avoided slip-ups and maintained his firm grip on the lead.

Huntsman = The best response regarding China, he's the only one who knew what he was talking about regarding our trade war. Smart man, bad politician. Irrelevant at this point.

Newt = Handled the moderators the best and gave the best answer on the healthcare question (decentralization) and social security. Probably the only remaining threat to Romney, despite what the polls say.

Cain = Beginning to lose all credibility as his only response to any question on economics is 9-9-9. Poll numbers will probably start to slip the closer we get to the nomination.

Paul = Elegant yet typical Paul performance. Great philosophy but too radical in his implementation. Numbers will probably stay in a tight range as the Paul base is pretty well-defined.

Santorum = More doe-eyed naivete reminiscent of Mister Rogers. Boring, self-admitted unexcited answers towing the party line. Remains irrelevant.

Bachman = Only intelligent response was to stop selling the Chinese our debt. Looks her campaign manager may have upped her dose of Valium which kept her attacks on Obama under 100. Poll highs long past, thank God.

Perry = Obviously his gaffe will dominate the headlines, his only intelligent proposition is to create jobs by drilling. Glad to see he finally put the nail in his own coffin.

Rick Santelli 2012

It is a shame. He would be a good president.

He might be paired up with the more conservative primary winner to make the GOP more palatable in a general election.

Could only get through about 25 minutes before I turned it off, nothing new, just a repeat of the same mantra of every other debate so far, nothing really substantive.

The answer is always the same.

"How will you fix this issue"?

"Gut the **** out of regulation and cut taxes"

"anything else"

"Nope".

well, the things are 30 seconds long. if you want the longer version, i would urge you to start watching FOX's "Special Report Center Seats"; where the panel interviews individual candidates for about 20-30 minutes, and allows for long, drawn out detailed answers.

The should be hammering the final nails into the Perry coffin sometime today.

I rather liked the way Newt handled the time limit restrictions in answering the health care question. That took some gumption and it made him look strong. He may rise a bit in the next two months.

This republican primary has been going on way to long...with too many candidates that should have never been in it in the first place...they all looked like buffoons except for Romney and Gingrich...this right wing devotion of Herman Cain is truly ridiculous...hes a foriegn policy moron...actually hes a moron on everything except...anything to help the rich...its amazing that an entire party has to cling to a person like him as their salvation.

I like michele bachman's tax plan. Two happy meals worth. I hope its a flat tax. If warren buffet is mad now only paying 17% of his income, imagine how mad he will be when he has to pay .000000000000000001% of his income in taxes.

Far righter...We need more tax cuts...
Interviewer..But you pay half of what you paid in 1997
Far righter ..So
Interviewer So your saying your just want more and more
Far Righter..No..I want to create jobs
Interviewer Top 30 corporations paid zero taxs and the rich are paying less than half of what they were and we have LOST millions of
jobs and have 9% unemployment
Far Righter..So
Interviewer. So how does more tax cuts create Jobs.
Far Righter..I dunno I just want another tax cut
Interviewer..What about all the americans that are hurting lost their jobs, lost their homes, cant find work..cant give their children
what they need.
Far Righter...So, not my fault they arent successful and didnt plan..I pay to much taxs, We need tax cuts, to create jobs.
Interviewer...YOU SUCK..
Far Righter...So..im sick of the parasites, i pay too much taxs..We need tax cuts to create jobs.

if we did cut taxes further to "create jobs," would American labor magically become more profitable than if we created the jobs in cheap labor markets?

so far, it's not trending that way.

for anyone who missed it.

I wish there was a true independent judge at these debates with a remote control to shock the candidate through their chairs when they wander away from answering the question. The ratings for these debates would shoot up tenfold if that was the case.

I was hoping one of the interviewers would ask how removing all regulations and bureaucrats was going to help our workers compete with people making under a $1 an hour.

In reality it was only 15-20 seconds because CNBC had to get their say in.

that's easy. it's not just 'costs' - it's "costs to productivity". if it costs $40 an hour to hire joe who has an output worth $400 an hour, but it costs $1 to hire steve who has an output of $5 an hour - then it is actually cheaper to hire joe.

What is a life worth ...A police officer at 30.00 an hour..produces nothing...whats your ass worth..:)
Kinda like a marine...doesnt produce anything...whats he worth...to me far far more than they are paid

If that was truly the case don't you think the corporations would realize that and not outsource? How dumb do you think these corporations are? Your statement sounds like something directly from the labor union.

Besides the pay per hour one must also take the benefits paid for that American worker vs nearly zero to the foreign worker.

It is always "remove the regulations" "remove the regulations",,,,, how many regulations do you think these dummies demanded on the debate protocol...

well, he was asking specifically about production. certainly neither police nor Marines "produce" anything, other than the conditions by which production can safely occur.

well, for a long time, the cost to productivity was still in favor of outsourcing - however, that tide is beginning to tilt back; nearly all the gains over the last two years have been in productivity.

Besides the pay per hour one must also take the benefits paid for that American worker vs nearly zero to the foreign worker.

well not only benefits, but regulatory burden. if you are so foolish as to try to hire an American worker, we're gonna charge you about $10,000 in regulator costs for the privilege. and God help you if you want to actually build a factory here - we don't take kindly to that at all. hope you're talented at EPA paperwork and handling lawsuits.

Newt / Huntsman would look interesting, but due to Newt's baggage I just feel he'd be better served as a VP with that ticket reversed.

These things are never ending, I swear. Same crap every single time. Santorum puts you to sleep, Huntsman hypnotizes you with his eyebrows, Michelle Bachmann spends the entire debate talking about herself instead of the issues, Newt acts like the mature older brother in the middle of a frat house, Romney wiggles his head and makes smarmy remarks about Perry, Perry stumbles over (valid) criticisms of Romney, Paul makes a lot of damned sense, but talks in a manner that goes over the heads of 99% of the viewers, so he is later labelled as "crazy and rambling", Cain makes a few good points but stumbles a bit and comes across angry or irritated (I'm estimating that there will be no fewer than 5 references to the accusations against him, btw).

Basically, call me when something new comes out.

I didn't watch last night, but how close was I??

Huntsman actually did well last night, without the help of eyebrows. Perry is done after his screw up. Cain just talked about 9-9-9 and will be screwed in the upcoming foreign policy debate. Newt was pretty aggressive to the moderators. Bachmann was Bachmann only with 80 attacks on Obama. Paul did really well as well.
