Newt Gingrich dropped a proposal for a series of debates at the end of the Nevada Debate last night (Oct 18, 2011). He said he would propose a series of seven Lincoln-Douglas style debates, each three hours long with no moderator and only a time keeper.

1) Who thinks Obama, who has compared himself to Lincoln, will actually agree to such a debate format if Gingrich were to get the republican nomination?

2) Who would win this debate?

This would be like the World series of Politics. I would love to see it. I don't know that Gingrich can get the nomination but I don't count him out. If he did get the nomination and Obama agreed to the format, Gingrich would devestate Obama. I say it would be over for Obama after the third debate. I don't think Obama would ever agree to this format though. He would have too much to lose.

A point of clarification: Obama made a joke where he compared the names Lincoln was called to the names he was called:

Obama said:
But when you listen to what the Federalists said about the anti-Federalists and the names that Jefferson called Hamilton and back and forth — I mean, those guys were tough. Lincoln, they used to talk about him almost as bad as they talk about me.

1) Of course he would not consent to those debates. It would be piss poor strategy. Obama has much more to lose.

2) That is hard to say. If by "win" you mean who would sway the most undecided voters by their performance, I think it could go either way. Gingrich is good at presenting arguments and his use of language, but Obama comes off as more sincere and likable.

A three hour unmoderated debate would be a chaotic lose-lose for everyone involved.

I guess Lincoln and Douglas were big losers.

The networks wouldn't carry it unless they interrupted it every 8 minutes with advertisements and useless commentary. Hell, there will be commentary blow by blow with every sentence uttered, because the networks don't believe some of us have an attention span longer than Michael Bay.

Gingrich won't get to the nomination so it is a moot point. But, no, Obama would not agree to such a lengthy debate. Gingrich has spent the last 10+ years building up knowledge through his book research and speaking tours. Obama could not cram enough information into his skull to effectively debate Gingrich even if he started studying right now.

Gingrich can say whatever he wants because he knows he has absolutely no chance of ever being the Republican candidate for President. Campaigning has always been a great money maker for Gingrich.

Without a teleprompter, which would be useless anyway in a debate setting, Obama doesn't have the skills to match up to Gingrich in a verbal matchup like this.

The Networks can't help but trying to make themselves part of the news.

Good luck, Newt.

In the past, Obama has done well in debates. The teleprompter talking point is retarded.

I think Gingrich would use his years of collective knowledge from both being a former House Speaker and from being a private citizen all these years to :spin: the arguments and keep the President on the defensive. In some cases, that might work well for him, i.e., the state of the economy current, but in others, i.e., immigration, health care cost and accessability, energy policy and foreign policy, Gingrich would surely lose.

Which is why McCain trounced Obama in every debate and it was the reason Hillary defeated Obama in the primary, right? Cause he did so bad in the debates?

Seriously, I get it that conservatives are angry because liberals managed to follow up a president that gave terrible speeches in general with one that gives great speeches in general, but there's no reason to be so angry about it that you go over the deep end. Anyone who literally can't complete a full sentence without a teleprompter, as some of the more dishonest conservatives on this forum seem to imply, wouldn't be able to win the presidency period.

As if we need to hear Romney say "Excuse me, I'm talking" about five million MORE times.

Who's Newt Gingrich?

That is way to long to have a conservative expert talk on major TV. It could destroy the whole liberal machine!

I would fall asleep :D

PBS may do the debate but just going to PBS will add the effect of sleepiness.

1. Gingrich is a sub-human sleaze that was sued for back child support. His own party forced him out of office back in the 90s, he stands no chance at all of getting the nomination.

2. Gingrich is a textbook narcissist that thinks that just because he comes up with ideas - most of which are ridiculous, that somehow that makes him intellectually superior to everyone else.

3. Obama may not be that good of a president, but chances are he is smarter than Gingrich is. After all, he was the president of the Harvard Law Review and taught constitutional law. Gingrich thought he was smarter than Clinton, and Clinton handed Gingrich's ass to him politically.

Whether libel or detraction, this post hardly addresses the issue.

Gingrich is a narcissist. He is proposing such a debate because he is a narcissist, and thus believes that he is intellectually superior to everyone else. Even if somehow he were to get the nomination, such a debate would backfire for him as Gingrich likes hearing himself talk far more than most people like hearing Gingrich. The fact is, its not as though his debate performances in the primaries have been stellar. He gets a few applause lines, but Romney is a far better debater than he is. Obama is a good debater, by all indications much better than Gingrich, so even if such a debate were to take place, Obama would probably win them. Moreover, since these things tend to be judge by viewers on the basis of who is the more likable person, Gingrich would not stand a chance as no one likes him.

The image of moral decline. And I'm not talking about Newt, although he has had his troubles.

Gingrich should spend three hours debating a snowball in hell, because that's about the chance he has of winning the nomination.
