New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has endorsed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for the Republican presidential nomination.

Mr Christie announced his support at an event in New Hampshire, where Mr Romney is preparing for a debate with rivals.

Mr Christie's support was in high demand after he announced last week that he would not be running.

Mr Romney is 18 points ahead with Republican voters in New Hampshire, according to a poll released on Monday.
Correspondents say Mr Christie's endorsement will send money from his own would-be financial backers to Mr Romney.
BBC News - Mitt Romney wins Chris Christie's endorsement

Looks like the GOP may be getting ready to say a firm 'No' the Tea Party candidates

Heard about this. I guess it's because Christie's a "closet liberal" :2razz:

It's an important chip for Romney.
Especially so soon after his Christie's decision not to run.
Christie, as advertised, made it quickly.

This bolsters Romney, the general favorite already, and lessens somewhat the chances of others.
Christie has credibility with most in the party - though doesn't make the Far right or Christian Right happy.
Romney needs more - an endorsement from the further Right - but that won't likely happen til it's pretty much over.

My take on it.... Chris Christie just ensured that I would never, under any circumstances vote for him.

Assuming your take is correct, there's a fairly decent likelihood that I'll be voting for Barrack Obama next November.

I'm confused. Why would a Christie endorsement translate into a vote for Obama?

I believe a number of Libertarian and Tea Party voters will either not vote or vote against Romney (for Obama) because they feel abandoned by the GOP. The question is will enough independents vote for the more moderate Romney to offset the lost votes. Another thing which could happen is a third party candidate - one agreeable to both Libertarians and Tea Party voters.

It just seems to me that whatever your "core values" are, a crossover from one party to another (as opposed to voting for a third-party candidate) is a little...odd.

Christie was told to throw the teaparty candidates under the bus....there is opposition to the far right teaparty beginning amongst the traditional GOP
I predicted this would happen before the Nov election....I know many on here would disagree...but their darling teaparty govs lost long time gop voters for them with their attacks on middleclass workers..

Americans do not like the far left and they do not like the right

well, it proves that 'tea partiers' are not just far-right. And will either have someone who believes in our principals, or we will reject them outright.

It's the potential Romney nomination that will make me vote for Obama, not Christie's endorsement. The endorsement simply ensures that I would never vote for Christie, nor would I do anything but sit there and smile were I to come upon him trapped in a burning car. Romney is a ****ing LIBERAL. Chris Christie has lost ALL Conservative credentials with my by supporting him. Romney is a LIBERAL and nothing more. He was the governor of the state I reside in, so I'm very familiar with his policies.

Upside down: the potential GOP candidate for President is more Liberal than the Democratic Party current President. I can see this from my house.

Romney's not a liberal, a conservative, or a moderate; he's whatever he thinks will win him an election.

Which makes him a Liberal by definition, Adam. He's a spineless, gutless sack of feces. Nothing more and nothing less. I say that as someone who had him as the Governor of the state I live in.

This is rich. Mitt Romney's own advisors helped craft Obamacare, yet the GOP is embracing him. Does anybody else notice the irony here? LOL.

People think Newt Gingrich is a conservative too.

You really shouldn't go around equating libertarians to the teapartiers like that. Them's fightin words.

I am really wondering if the biggest reason the GOP has fought ObamaCare so hard is they want it ushered in under a GOP president like Romney. Anyone who has done even a cursory study of costs under single payer systems versus costs under the current US system knows the savings are going to be huge. Also, insuring the uninsured is going to very popular among voters who current vote primarily Democratic - minorities and the less-affluent.

Welcome to American presidential politics.

Separated them in my statement rather than lumping them into the 'more conservative' pot together for a reason. I know Libertarians and Tea Party members have a very different ideas about what changes are needed and why. They are also polar opposites on social reforms.
