The Cherokee Nation

We have been to a garden yesterday in Kharkov(Ukraine), which is a very nice one by the way and I have found something interesting. The poster from the restaurant to the outside has the name and the offers on it, while the inside contains a reprint of a Cherokee newspaper from 1828, it is called "Cherokee Phoenix". It is partly written in Cherokee language and partly written in English language. There is a Cherokee only language version, too, but the reprint had both languages.

It has some interesting articles. The first part was about people who want to work in Cherokee Nation, they could do so. They were looking for blacksmiths and ferrimen and some other professions. They could have 12 acres of land to cultivate if they came there.

If I get it right, the Cherokee Nation actually had something like a flat tax for shop owners at this time. It is not even more flat than in Slovakia, where businesses pay 19 per cent. It was $25 per annum for long-term stores and $80 per annum for temporary stores. To have a long-term store, you had to be a citizen of the Cherokee Nation.

Alcohol could have been imported only by citizens, it was not allowed for merchants who were not citizens.

If empoyees stole something, the employer got hold responsible.

At the end of the reprint there was a letter from the US President, where he addressed the people as Beloved Cherokees. It was about agricultural development with cattles and sheeps and about spinning and weaving.

I came to DebatePolitics from a forum which was founded and owned by ThePhoenix, who is a Cherokee, too.
