And they aren't. Even New York's ban on transfats doesn't stop people from eating what they want. Nothing I've heard of was cut from transfat using restaurants' menus.

I suppose then you're against the labels on the back of products telling you what went into them? That is effectively the same thing. Mandating that food providers tell you what they put into it.
Furthermore, forcing the display of calorie charts provides more information to consumers in a free market, giving them better information to make choices on. And you'd be surprised just how ignorant people are of such information. Even Subway sandwiches are often more then people think they are.
