And he would have had he won Florida, though he probably would not have had to worry about it as donations would have poured in. Florida really pissed me off as in the exit polls, people said their biggest concern was the economy. Hello? How they could have chosen McCain over Romney as regards this subject bugs me to this day.
My beef with the earlier Romney campaign was how they ran it - too dirty. It solidified an image of stoicness and coldness, rather than illuminate his rather friendly and down to earth character. He gained in popularity when he simply got his name out there and expressed himself. His attack ads recoiled on him IMO.
Ultimately, he had the wrong people running his campaign. That cost him the race. He should have won Florida and that would have changed everything.
