Until socialists arrived in 1880, thousands of the children worked in coal mines 12 hours/day. Adults worked even more, and could just survive with their wage (60% of their salary was needed to buy food).

Those who had an arm or a leg crushed by a machine were just fired without any compensation.

It was the socialists who limited the work day to 12 and then 10 hours/day
It was them who forbad children labor
It was them who gave workers the right to strike and a minimal wage
It was them who brought universal vote right (at least in my country)

You may not agree with "too socialist" policies, but some socialism was really needed
I thought those were the "progressives" or "Reformist" policies.
