The problem is that you're skipping a part. Was he friends and a mentee (What? Is that even a word? Well, let's just say it is because I'm lazy) with these people because of their opinions and leanings that we find objectionable? Did he attend that church BECAUSE the pastor was a racist? Or was it because they had agreed on all of the other things?
I remember in 4th grade I had a really awesome teacher named Mr Houston. He ran the classroom less as a dictatorship and more as a democracy. I read books in that class that were way above my grade level and a small group of us would discuss them at recess with him. If I wanted to cite someone for my love of reading, it would be him. He was also busted for sexually abusing two girls in his class later.
I didn't abandon my love of reading because of the guy, but I denounce his actions. Obama didn't denounce his religion because of the preacher who had racist views, he decided to leave that church.
Like I've said before, this is such a non-issue. YMMV.
