It's recognizing the reality of the system. In a system where only a plurality is required for electoral victory a two party system will naturally arise as people will get sick of their votes for the guy they like best leading to the other more unified side getting their guy. In a two party system the place for broader selections based on the choice of one's favorite is the primaries. The general election is our system's equivalent to the run off elections in majoritarian electoral systems.
