It is the 'over the top in its imagery and suggestions' that makes the ad dishonest. Most people will not analyze the facts stated in the ad and evaluate those on their own merits--they will see only the insinuations and orchestrated implications and will not respond intellectually but with the a knee jerk negative emotional response that is fully intended by the ad maker.
Wouldn't it be refreshing if you could list all of McCain's 'objectionable' relationships and why they might be questionable along with all of Obama's 'objectional' relationships and why they might be questionable? And then do that with every single facet of the campaign process so that people could see everything side by side and make their judgments accordingly? Cut out the subliminal promotions targeted at the mindless, brainwashed, ignorant, and uneducated, and we might actually encourage most people to make an informed choice of who would be the best President.
