when people were less evolved, when society was more barbaric, society required strong social control. norms had to be strictly enforced because without strong regulation society would collapse and man would go back to living in trees.

as society becomes more civilized less and less social control is required as increasing sophistication allows for the enjoyment of freedoms which would have been dangerous in more barbaric times.

I believe the reason Southerners find social change so frightening is because the South is fundamentally less civilized then the North, and as a result requires stricter social control.
