Re: Monument to homosexual victims of Nazis unveiled

In the Nazi system, homosexuals were classified as "asocial" elements and were typically incarcerated in labor camps. They were identified by a pink triangle stitched on their shirt/blouse. Male homosexuals typically either perished under camp conditions, were executed by camp guards, or were murdered by fellow inmates. The best chance at survival was to become the "bitch" of their Kapo (barrack supervisor - a prisoner usually incarcerated as a criminal with a green triangle) who would in turn protect them from harm. Lesbians were almost always incarcerated at the Ravensbrück female camp facility, and their survival rate was better than that of male homosexuals who could wind up anywhere within the Nazi camp system.
