Dealing with modern cars is impossible for the typical hobbyist. Modern cars have computer systems that require serious hardware to even communicate with. Other than dealing with the very basics, there is little the average person can do to maintain a modern car on their own. Rotating tires and changing the oil is about all you can really do.

Having a real "civics class" in Highschool should be mandatory. It should cover the basics of being an adult citizen. It should cover finances and monetary stuff like credit ratings, your legal rights as a citizen including dealing with the police and how to register to vote,
