In response to ten's comment about car repair, although I don't drive a car I think that'd be really useful too, at least in most places in the country.

My school didn't have a shop class and it's something I really regret...particularly when I'm ****ing around with bike hubs or something mechanically complicated. A simple primer on tools would have been invaluable.
Exactly! Although I have learned to fix my own bike, just from taking it apart and putting it back together; trial and error.
But a car is far too valuable to tinker with that way. I don't know the first thing about how to take care of even minor maintenance issues on a car.

I think, just a class that encouraged mechanical aptitude, that allowed students to take apart appliances and tinker with them and figure out how to put them back together, would be extremely practical and educational. It would allow kids' minds to develop in a whole different direction from the usual direction taught in school.
