I'd have to say you're pretty spot on up to here, though depending on the Dem candidate the crucial states might be different ones.

Surprisingly, I don't think this is at all implausible. Hell, if I had to pick a particular scenario to happen, I'd say this is right near the top. I hope the McCain administration does a better job, but this wouldn't terribly surprise me either.
